Description
I really tried to use shadow and lighting to control the perspective of this one. Clearly this is a top down, slightly angled pose. The leg and arms are the prime suspects here. I used darker shadow to show what's further away while lightly shadow to show what is closer. As for the hair, I wanted to do some nice dark hair with some obvious lines and shadow. So yeah, this is a girl pulling back her shirt a little, exposing her pierced belly. Let me know what you guys think. If you think she needs darker shading on her limbs, like those that are further away, let me know. If you think she needs lighting on that which is closer, in the form of me erasing some of the pencil, let me know.Related content

Certainly better than your previous drawing, you've made great progress.

You mean between this one and the one I did years ago, right? Also, this drawing is like 2 years old now.

Yes, I was mentioning your old drawing. This drawing is 2 years old?! I can't believe that.

Yeah, it's from May, 2014. I'm glad you like this one though, this is one of my all time favorites. Everything turned out perfect with it.

Brilliant pose. I don't think I've seen many (if any) like this. Very unique and it looks challenging. You pulled it off very well. Nice job dude.

Thank you, it was a bit of a challenge as far as the pose itself, but the folds of the fabric, shading, and lighting were the real challenging parts.

At first I thought she was laying on her back until I read that it was a top down pose. Good job getting away from your comfort zone! That always gets interesting results!

I was careful not to rush this. I felt the artistic surge building but I resisted, waited till I knew absolutely NOTHING could interrupt me and 1 am, Monday night, I pounced on this. Put on some good music, put up the reference pic on my monitor, wheeled myself to my art desk, pointed the monitor in the general direction, and everything fell into place perfectly.
Though...I do have a reference pic of a girl lying down on her back. The camera is from her feet, so it's looking towards her face but the belly is in the way. That might be a decent pic to experiment with...hmmm....hmm.
Thanks for the comment as always man. You're probably my most consistent and long time comment giver.

Well, I know everyone says they don't care about comments but deep down the human need for affirmation beats in us all. It kinda feels like the "Pay it forward, not pay it back." vibe y'know?

Yeah, if you see some art and you like it, comment, at least tell the person you like it.

Great image here, I like the change in perspective. Excellent level of detail present here, and the unique viewpoint really sets it apart.
Also in general, great job on the curves, flawless linage, great shading, and excellent proportional balance.
The only thing I can really find that's a bit odd is her toes seem a bit odd. Other than that, it looks very very good.
Two great submissions in a row. Good job, your really on a roll right now.

Yeah, I'm really not great with feet. I've been intentionally drawing barefoot girls to get better at it. Thank again for the praise. Personally, I wouldn't say the lines are perfect. I messed up on her right arm and had to redraw it. However, I am really proud of how the fabric, shading, hair, and perspective came out. I was worried she'd look like she had teeny limbs with a big head. I mean, she looked that way till the shading was put it anyways. I'm also incredibly impressed with how many favs this drawing has gotten so far.

I think the proportions look nice and don't show any visible flaws. So I wouldn't worry about that.
And yeah, the only way to get better at something is to practice, even if the first few tries don't look great.
Anyway, awesome job on this one. Definitely an interesting piece.

Thank you. I've been experimenting with reference photos way more. Like my last few drawings of Mira, the Manchu woman I drew, this one, my friend's portraits, all from reference pics. The only problem with that is I have to actually have them in front of me and my parents like to interrupt me when I draw. It seems like they psychically know when I'm drawing and just knock on me door twice, then open it without me saying come in. Too much of a risk considering I'd have to close my tablet, slide my chair to my computer desk, minimize or close the reference photo, all before they open my door. Kinda not possible. Thus, I've avoided drawing lately. What I got done is due to them actually not being around.
Anyways, I do have more photos I want to draw from so, expect some different stuff, maybe....
I do need to practice again with my markers but that would use a really simple, plain drawing. Minimize the actual line art, focus on the coloring and the techniques, thus no epic pose or perspective and what not.

Well I'm sure eventually you'll have some space or privacy later down the line.
Anyway, should be interesting to see what you come up with.

Yeah, I'm applying to grad school 5 states away, for starting in January. If they accept me, holy shit, I will be A) a Chinese history teacher for real, B) away from my family and extended clan FINALLY, and C) making fucking money. The only fears I have is being away from my family tombs. That's a big deal since I'm the only one who regularly attends to them. My mom's side of the family hasn't even visited our family tombs since 2008. That is un-fucking-acceptable.
Though...if I didn't have them to deal with, I would be unbelievably efficient. No distractions, no one to interfere in my art and schoolwork. Sounds almost like paradise. Just...lacking something major. Alas, my life can be summed up in the statement "I cannot reconcile the two distinctive halves of my personality, thus they are in constant conflict."

Are you Chinese-American? Or is your interest in China mostly academic?
Also I'm sure you could probably persuade someone to take over for you if you convinced them it was important to you.
Anyway, should be interesting what you can do once you have the time and clarity to make it happen.
Good luck.

No, I'm actually Southern Italian by ethnicity and culture but I'm like more Chinese culturally now due to 3 years working with all Chinese people lol.
As for my family tombs and what not, only my mom does it when I don't and since we're not on speaking terms with her extended side of the family, it complicates things. But yeah, I am so looking forward to the day when I have freedom to draw when I want and what I want. I used to have it last summer but really, other people's schedules have interfered.

Right ok, the whole "family tombs" thing and "Chinese history teacher" thing kinda threw me off. That's cool that your interested enough in that culture though.
Right, well I'm sure you'll figure something out.
Anyway, good luck with your future plans.

Nah, one of the big things I noticed the Chinese and Italians have in common is family graves. I usually go ever major Church holiday and clean things up and recite the prayers and what not. My mom usually does it if I don't.
Thanks again, I appreciate the wishes of good luck.
