Well, this is some really good stuff. We got to see his hair and his face but the most important part are those eyes. They're haunting. And they're well drawn. You did one admirable job on this guy.

My ideas
1): maybe he gets mortally wounded during a mission, so he needs to take his armor off so the priestess can heal him.
2): maybe during a fight with a hobgoblin, it hits him so hard that it knocks his helmet off
3): maybe he just takes it off out of the blue
