In my Hyrule, many tales are told of the evil Wind Mage, Vaati. Most of them involve the many-winged, one-eyed monster who steals away maidens (and sometimes ill-behaved children!) to his Palace of Winds in the sky, only to be defeated by the Hero of Men and the Four Sword, time and again.

But once in a while--especially closer to the Market Town near Hyrule Castle--you'll hear a different tale: the story of how Vaati walked in Hyrule in human form, and fell in love with a Hylian maiden.

Those who doubt the truth of this tale are invited to go to the Royal Graveyard and see for themselves the tomb of pale stone that bears these words:

Merai
Lady of the Kingdom of Hyrule
Lady of the Palace of Winds

Here you see Vaati dancing with Merai, before Merai was either Hyrule's lady or Vaati's, and was still attendant to the Princess' Court. The new King of Hyrule has invited the Wind Mage to his father's funeral and his coronation, hoping to open cordial relations with the Palace of Winds.

Merai's dress was a gift from Vaati, several years ago when he let her and her younger brother Stefan go from the Palace of Winds, in exchange for their oath not to reveal its location.

For those who are following the Myriad Path, this is quite a few years beforehand; Garrin and Choro would be about five or six years old.
