This is amazing! I just tried to do those motions, and it really worked! I have the balance of a weeble, so it was hard, but it was so cool to be able to do it! Thank you so much for putting these up, you've done a great job on all of your storyboards and this one is no exception ^^ You're truly lucky to have worked on the show - too bad it's over now. I was wondering, what will you do now that the show is over? Do you have a new job at Nick?

Actually, I've been off the show for over a year now. Went back to Nick to work on a tv serie version of the Penguins of Madagascar.

...really? Were the episodes made that far in advance? O_O Wow.....Oh, I remember seeing something about that show ^^ Glad you're still at Nick, though. Your talents are too wonderful to go to waste ^^

Animation is a long process, with many steps happening even before it is even sent to be animated: script writing, then characters, props and BG designs, storyboards. All this needs to be done before animation and takes many weeks. So work was over for some of us, lots still needed to be done afterwards.

.....I have a lot to learn, don't I? I knew that the process was long, and I had once heard that Avatar episodes were made somewhere around 9 months to a year before they aired, but wow....To me, BGs would take years. My depth perception is horrible

Thanks for answering my questions! ^^

story board always feel so much more natural than the actual animation, why is that? its wonderful seeing the thinking process behind it all- lovely stuff!

Many thanks. You have to admit though that rough animation has also a charm of its own. If you haven't seen it, one of the Avatar animator posted some rough animation from season one. A thing of beauty

Awesome! I wish I could draw that well.
Drawing story boards is one of the artistic careers I'm interested in. Well, a long time from now after I'm done with all my schooling Did you have to take any special classes to learn how to do this? And how much does it tie into comic illustrating?

Sorry for the random questions. I really admire your work! ^_^

rufftoon In reply to McMitters [2008-07-21 00:36:14 +0000 UTC]

Some people simply went to go a good art school: one that taught many techniques. The best to survive in the industry is to be versatile. So whatever you learn could be used for illustrations, designs, comics or animation.

I think drawing storyboards sounds like a fun job, but I've been leaning more towards comics. Mostly due to my difficulties with drawing consistently. But I still have many years to go and will just have to see where the road of life takes me. Thanks for the advice!

rufftoon In reply to arctic-ex [2008-07-20 07:34:36 +0000 UTC]

Nope. Based on the natural movement of the sequence, that's how it went.

Where can I learn how the whole animating process goes? D:

It looks so easy with all the little side notes that say "Character does this!" Like maybe you write that down and then the TV makes it happen. ... Maybe. *shifty*

rufftoon In reply to UntanglingRopes [2008-07-20 08:19:13 +0000 UTC]

It would be too long to explain here in a reply, but you can find more about the animation process by simple web searches or reading a book on animation.

Haha i remember when i was watching this episode, i was like. It musta been hard to animate this o_o (the room with the statues was very epic)

But seeing it displayed out like this is really cool. You guys did awesome work.

Do you ever get frustrated or stuck on a pose, like with all the bending and stuff that happens in the show?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

rufftoon In reply to ProMenthefus [2008-07-20 08:20:34 +0000 UTC]

Nope. We always manage to work it out. Plus, we get very good reference when it comes to bending moves.

Starting as a storyboard artist straightaway may be a bit hard. You could start as Storyboard cleanup before moving up.

Storyboards are always so fun! Do you have to figure out the transitions between bending poses like this? If so, do you ever stand there and do them yourself? I know I would, plus it's fun! if not a little silly, to act like you're bending

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

rufftoon In reply to firewolf826 [2008-07-19 04:05:28 +0000 UTC]

For this, we had good references. But for some other moves, we'll sometime take the pose to understand it better.
