And again...... AWESOME WORK

best work ever seen!!

one question: how do they animate that afterwards?
do they draw the figure, in the actual movie, from all that sides (which are faced by the camera) or is that a 3D character?

because I often noticed there were some 3D objects especially in the 3rd book (like the firenation aircrafts)

(late reply is late)

These storyboards are guides for the animators: from it, they have the right camera angle to draw the backgrounds. The character will be drawn on a separate level from said background.
When CG is involved. the animator needs to know where the 3D elements will be: often that can be easily done with a good screen grab (the 3D model will be animated before the characters).

This was a very beautiful part of the finale, and it's an honour to be able to see the actual story board snatches. Your art really is fabulous! *bows* Thank you so much for sharing.

/serious: Aw, darn, Aang is so cute (I'm saying that in a 'mummy' sort of tone) -^v^- Even when he's behaving in an all grown-up sort of way due to the circumstances, I really do love how the show kept his being a 12-year-old in mind. It really gave it a touch of naturality that was unique to it! I hope you had fun during this undertaking! ^v^ It was sure fun to watch!

I love this move! It is so much fun when you pull it off and send someone flying with it!

More silly questions: When you have reference for the martial arts, it is static like a picture? Or do you get the full blown video from many angles? I know you had a kung fu master on staff right? Regular people are hard enough to draw, doing martial arts takes just a metric ton of anatomy and understanding of not just balance but moving balance, and I couldn't see doing it without at least video hehe.

rufftoon In reply to JohnLeFou [2009-03-31 07:47:55 +0000 UTC]

There were videos made: one was a general point of view, to get a basic idea of the move. Usually, that was enough to work from. Sometimes, they would re-shoot the move to better fit the angle of the storyboard and get a better reference for animation.
For this part, it was the general point of view.

WOOOOOOOOOAH SO COOL!! man all the atoryboards are awesome! You work these out from just a script right? Man you guys're like the cinematographers, gettin the sweet camera angles and doin the wicked cool key poses!! (I think that's what you guys do...haha!) however rough, each pose looks so accurate and important, I really like lookin at things like this, I'm glad they let you post em to us rabid fans!

A big thank you, for working on one of the last great series in the past 10 years.

We reached the end here in germany too. Big finale today.
And I'm sad to see the end, but also happy that there are still quality lovers who know that the 'shark jumping' destroys the art of a show.

Depends on the studio. But, very mundanely, it is like an office except people draw at their desks

There are jobs like this out there. But careful- they are usually attached to heavy deadlines and much revisions.

Heavens, I've been following your Zhao doujinshi for a while but had no idea you worked on the show! I really loved the dragon dance scene as well so I was rather surprised to see animation drafting for it in your gallery!

It's also very awesome to see how the animation planning process works.

Thanks for sharing!

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

rufftoon In reply to LuseyMoth [2008-08-25 19:10:42 +0000 UTC]

Good heavens, no.
I was just one little cog in the whole production crew. Them cartoons need a whole bunch of people to get done.
To answer your other comment at the same time, I have no influence whatsoever on Avatar toy productions or in bringing back Avatar on television. I have no power on those type of decisions.

Depending on productions, some storyboards are more or less complex to do.

thetrueavatard [2008-07-22 02:42:55 +0000 UTC]

Yikes, this just goes to show how much work goes into a single pose, and the notes... and it's cool to see how the notes help correspond with the pictures and eventually end up on TV. It's staggering to see just how much work goes on behind the animation process...

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 0

rokiicha [2008-07-22 02:29:00 +0000 UTC]

do you start out with a skeleton for the pose?
or do you just draw the body as is?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

rufftoon In reply to rokiicha [2008-07-31 16:57:08 +0000 UTC]

I try to capture the pose and movement as is. If something feels off, I quickly sketch basic lines for the skeleton.

Ame-Abunai [2008-07-22 02:24:33 +0000 UTC]

So if I remember right you were actually working on the show right? so what about the last question that zuko asks... T-T I was so sad to not hear about his mummy

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 0

AgnesPterry [2008-07-21 17:06:04 +0000 UTC]

I can't believe Avatar is finally over. *sniff.* And here I was hoping they'd do a chapter for the book of Air as a sort of postlude or sequel, showing the process of rebuilding the firenation and slowly righting the wrongs of the past hundred years or so. I also kind of wish we'd been able to learn *exactly* what happened to Zuko's mother. I was sure she was fighting in a rebellion (when the painted lady episode first showed I was convinced that she was going to be Zuko's mother.)

But I guess Aang got the girl of his dreams after all.

It's cool to see the storyboards for the firebending masters, by the way!

Green-Ruby [2008-07-21 02:24:37 +0000 UTC]

These are way cool, I still wonder how these help them put in the tiniest details they manage to squeeze in.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

rufftoon In reply to Green-Ruby [2008-07-21 02:54:23 +0000 UTC]

These are just a guide. It is up to the animator to really make it move.
