More writing than drawing in this one. Just thought it would be interesting to compare the two scenes, the original animated series one with the movie version.
Though there were no obvious problems with the screen directions per say, it was the whole action- reaction and timing that was awkward in the movie.
Notice that for the animated series, we don't even see one earthbender doing one attack, and yet it is clear and makes sense.
Screen direction in storyboards, cutting and editing is very important. It is the link between the chains of events. It connects with the 180 degree rule :
[link]
Please note that this rule can be broken in service to the story, for emotional effect, etc.
As for the "Macarena" in panel 6, I blame this video:

Omg that Macarena video! XD
Also I've really loved getting to see all the storyboards you do and learning little tidbits about them through these Last Airbender analysis pages (the bonus humor is extra icing heaped on the cake). I'm hoping to get into some kind of entertainment art job someday, and story boarding has really caught my eye as of late, looks like fascinating stuff! Thanks so much for putting these together and sharing them!

It still bothers me that the benders had to go through all the movements before any of the elements actually moved, whereas in the show the elements were bent with each movement. And this scene in the movie just made me laugh. I mean, come on! Five earthbenders to move one tiny little rock? Totally illogical.

a month after seeing the movie, I just now understand that the small rock wasn't thrown by the dancing earthbenders...
As much as I did enjoy some parts of the movie, many of them, for various reasons, were very painful and awkward to watch, and this one is probably at the top of the list..

I agree with you about the awkward moments in the film.
And for people who say I'm wholly negative, I'll say I liked that one shot of the fire nation navy leaving their harbour.

OMG! ITΒ΄S THE FIRST TIME I ACTUALLY SEE A PART OF THE MOVIE AND THAT WAS AWFUL! AWFUL IΒ΄M TELLING YOU! Ok, passed the overreaction, in the "lame movie"Β΄s story direction, mirroring the second panel would work? I mean, making the firebender standing in the right and attacking to the left.

rufftoon In reply to Heroheart360 [2010-08-15 22:25:36 +0000 UTC]
What is important here is screen direction: if the earthbender is standing screen right, and the fire attack moves from left to right, if you shoot a reverse angle of that same earthbender it is better if he stays screen right so the attack comes in from the same screen direction.
It just hooks up better.
Mind you, there could be ways of "resetting" those angles to change the screen directions, but there weren't done in the previous shots. Therefore, you had to continue following the same screen directions.

Yea I was really confused when I saw trhat scen in the movie. Most of the bending took like 5 or ten min. of dance to bend some little thing......
the movie wasn't at all like i expected...
I liked this though, This is awesome!

Oh gods!
I still haven't seen the movie so that video link was the first time I'd seen the FAIL that was earthbending in the movie.
Though I did read one review that made a practical explination for all the extra dancing in the Airbender movie. They were supposed to have more bending and the special effects budget ran out.

I have not watched the movie yet but I've read complaints about this scene. I watched a clip of the earthbending on youtube and it looks even goofier than it did in my imagination. If the one boy was the one who moved the rock, they should have made it clearer.

Wait? They created the stone wall? And this little kid created that little rock? Wow... now it makes sense...
Though this huge dance wouldn't be necessary for the stone wall. + it's too slow to react to the fire o_O
...arr, the movie makes my head hurt...

rufftoon In reply to sascape [2010-08-15 22:28:27 +0000 UTC]
The dance isn't necessary at all: the stone wall was done. Over. Finished. Why keep moving unless you expect to create more effects?
Moving with no results at the end makes you wonder what exactly it is they are trying to accomplish.
Unless it is just dancing for the sake of dancing.

I've recently watched the two first books of the series and it's really amazing, I so enjoyed how much attention was brought to composition in realization and all...
I remember perfectly this scene for I watched it several time with my girlfriend as we were analyzing exactly what you pointed there!^^ It was so well done!
Another scene I greatly loved was in the first part of Winter Solstice, when Zuko hesitates a second between trying to catch the Avatar or rescuing his uncle, as he looks at the different directions of the path we see his scar when he's looking on the Avatar's side... That was a really nice and subtle detail, it's being used again later on and it's really great!
But about this piece the advice is really good and the text bubbles you added are hilarious!
