If your camera is able to support longer shutter speeds I would suggest to give it about 5 seconds (or more). This way you can do more light painting while also taking your time.
It's good to experiment with the different shutter speeds, just be sure that if you're using a model he/she stays as still as possible.
Be careful with the laser and your eyes, ok.

Thanks! I don't think my camera supports any higher than one second, but if I ever upgrade, I'll keep that in mind!
Oh yeah, that safety thing... I suppose it's important :^P
