thanks for ur reply!
However I must say, looking at the pic (ignoring the black lines), i really dont see how it is not 'smooth'... Hmm
WOuld u be able to send me the whole picture after gausian blur? 1 with the black lines, and one without? Just for comparison and also to train my eyes!
This is something that I've always been interested in (photo retouching), and I've never come across a tutorial that really gives this 'fashion-front-cover-look'. The technique i used is basically a gausian blur, then set opacity to a level that satifies. Gives a really nice soft look. Your result seem to retain facial definitions and really a flawless skin.
Anyway, hope to hear from ya again.

The airbrushing smoothes out whatever the gaussian blur leaves behind. Yea, the difference is very subtle, I'll try to make you a comparisson picture when I get to my home comp. (give me 4-5 days).
Retaining the facial definitions is the result of erasing the gaussian blur layer in areas of sharp detail and then hand-brushing that area until flawless. The smaller the work area - the smaller the brush size.

wow, this is the effect i've always wanted to achieve...!!
However, I am really having a hard time wid the airbrushing part. I am not grasping the concept of it Where do u actually airbrush??? I seemed to start of wid one area then next thing I know i'm brushing all over the face and end up wid a one-dimensional look... hope u understand. Please help if you could...
Thanks for the tut!

You airbrush wherever the skin is not smooth, see pic #6, brush the black "lines" into smooth curves. If you are getting a 1-D look, try using a soft brush with lower opacity (from 15-30%, never more). You also have to constantly resample your colour (/w colour picker). Resample your colour every two-three brush strokes.
Practice makes perfect . Cheers

I don't see why I can't use the blur tool where I want to. I admit I'm new, AND I'm working on a 72 dpi picture, but I don't see what good the airbrushing is doing when my blur tool usage makes the skin look smooth. Sage advice?

I've never tried to use blur instead of airbrushing. I guess that would work also to some extent. You get more control with airbrushing in terms of depth of shading of the face. Whenever you blur you are only using the tones of the pixels in vicinity of the blur, whereas when you airbrush, you have more freedom to bring in lighter/darker shades. Show me some examples, maybe I'll be able to shed some critique. Cheers

Nice! Very Nice! I don't do glam portraits or anything but I do the same kinda thing - just messing around. I use the ''Edit in quick mask mode'' and the ''Gaussian Blur'' then add noise...works the same but the finished picture doesn't look as great as yours!

Yea, I recently started using the Gaussian Blur as the basis for the airbrushing layer, and it works pretty well.
Thanks for comment

Wow! Great tutorial, and amazing use of what I would have thought would be a useless photograph (no offense) because of the quality, etc. Now I know how to make almost any photo look great! ^0^

Haha, no offense taken. This goes to show that even mortals can glam
But a photo taken in the way as I described (with ambient/atmospheric light) can be quite useful for all styles of art. I used this photo for my devID, and it combines 3 totally different styles.
Thanks for +fav, 110% appreciated
Cheers
