Description Yay, after hours of sitting in the garden on high alert I got a Bumblebee - hurrah!
The background flowers looked a bit busy so I desaturated it.

Nice idea to highlight the very wispy&cuddly bee that way. Looks as it is a little little bit unsharp...But it's hardly conspicuously. Nice capture!

Gorgeous

I've been quite tempted to do the same but haven't gotten up the courage to put my patience to the test like that.

Hey, do you mind if I ask you a question? I just recently got some software for photo editing, so I'm a complete and total n00b when it comes to altering only part of a photo... how does one desaturate a background while leaving the subject untouched?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

runwhileyoucan In reply to GuitarPhotogrphr [2006-07-19 11:41:21 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! The desaturation can be done in a couple of different ways, I used photoshop, duplicated the layer and cut out the bee from the second layer and pasted it into a new one, then desaturated the background and cleaned up any coloured areas left around the bee. I think it can also be done by masking part of the layer, but I haven't got the hang of that yet. Alternatively make a new layer and fill it with dark grey/black, reduce the opactiy so you can see the image in the original layer but it appears to be in b&w, then erase the part of the grey layer that covers the bee. That's just photo shop though, so it may be different depending what software you have

Wow, the detail is amazing! Great macro work...I'm also impressed that you managed to get that close to the insect.
Have you tried a version where the colours are faintly visible in the background? It just seems odd to me to see black and white flowers.

I did, this piece probably had more incarnations that anything else, including variations in the desaturation, hue etc, there was even pop art bumble bee. The full colour version is in scraps, but I didn't like it and at the time my gallery was full of flowers so I wanted to ignore them completey

I see
Yeah, I took a look at the full colour version; I didn't find it too busy, but it does deemphasise the bee.

This is an excelent shot of the busy bee at work. Its a miricle you got it to stay in one place long enough. The picture itself is a testament to your patience.
