I've seen many a screenshot from Minecraft, but I still don't understand the premise of the game.

Sandbox is really the greatest way to describe Minecraft. Since it's creation, it has become so much more. I see it as a building game. A game where you can take a per-layed out environment, and turn it into whatever you imagine.
While I view it as a game, it really doesn't fit into the typical mold of a game. There is nobody to give you a mission, and tell you to do things.
