Personality:

Kato is a highly curious lion, often traveling to places that he heard gossip about. He often enjoys the trip to the place, but once he gets there he's on high alert and will not hesitate to run away if things go south, as he’s not the strongest lion around. He spends most of his time traveling from place to place, trying to scrounge up some food, and sleeping. When around others, he’s hesitant if he doesn’t know them or if they’re part of the Vimbue tribe, since if there’s one Vimbue around there’s probably another around. But once he hangs around them for a bit, and perhaps gains a new friend or two, he’s quite cheerful and friendly to them. He tries to spend time hunting with his fellow loners, as two or more lions and hyenas hunting is better than just him! He often uses food as a way to gain friends, as he found that most don’t mind a free bite or two and start to relax around him. He doesn’t get angry often, but when he does it’s mostly about food. He’ll attempt to protect his food from enemies, but if there’s more than one of them, or they’re clearly stronger than him, he’ll grab a piece and run for his life.

History:

Kato was born to a loner mother, Chausiku (born at night), with his twin sister, Asha (life), at Traveler’s Landing. His mother had traveled far while pregnant with the two cubs, and had decided that she would stay at the abandoned tribe city until the two were old enough to travel. His sister Asha was the braver of the two cubs, but Kato’s curiosity was stronger and often asked his sister to come with him to explore, which she had no problem of doing. A few lions and hyenas visited Traveler’s Landing, but only stayed to rest a day or two, and never noticed the cubs, only their mother.

When Kato and his sister became old enough to hunt, their mother decided to start roaming with the two. She never dared to cross the Dead-End Bridge after hearing rumors about the lion and hyena tribes of the west of the River Wethu. So throughout his cubhood and adolescence, he never encountered any of the Wethu tribes during his youth. His sister was the stronger of the two, being more well-built and larger than him, while he was scrawny and fast. Although a life of a loner was rough, his mother taught him and his sister well and the small family made a good hunting party. The group was able to use more tactics to hunt successfully, so his belly was full more often than if he was just alone.

When he was three and his mane was mostly grown out, he separated from his mother and sister on good terms. The two lionesses decided they would stick around for a few more seasons, and would head back to where Chausiku was born. Kato did not wish to travel the vast eastern desert and instead wanted to explore west. However, he decided that he wanted to learn how to live by himself for a few seasons before braving the unknown land known to have tribes. Occasionally, he stumbled across his mother and sister and hunted with them, but the family separated again once the food was gone.

Word eventually traveled past the Dead-End Bridge that all the tribes but one, Vimbue, was destroyed. Interested that he wouldn’t have to worry about warring tribes or stumbling across tribe-owned land, he cautiously crossed the bridge after seeing his mother and sister one last time. He made sure to skirt around the Vimbue territory as much as he could before exploring the unknown land.
