Description Finally I stop being lazy and actually get around to finalising his design.

This isn't actually the final sprite though. I've still got to add some things. Namely shine and polish. I'll upate that when I do. Colours aren't final either and may be subject to change (clean palletes are so, so useful.)

As you can see, he's got a more armored, firm design compared to Ginnigan. Pyre is a 'warrior-type (W-type) android, meaning that unlike the peaceful 'new types (N-type)' who are built for upholding the established utopian society, he is naturally drawn to conflict and has difficulty keeping his fighting impulses supressed. Pyre is still young and inexperienced, but after having grown up with some difficulty in a society geared more increasingly towards peace, he eagerly joins the rebellion in hope of seeing a new world where his kind are given a purpose and freed from the current system that keeps W-type models under severe lock and key.

Like most of his kind, he is bitter towards the N-types and considers W-types to be superior in all regards. His manner of thinking is very straightforward and simple and he views the world in black and white, completely the opposite of Ginnigan. Pyre has convinced himself that the rebellion is fighting for the greater good, giving him a purpose and allowing him to use his talents as a warrior to free Utopia from the opressive big brother society. Like the fire he weilds, he is strong-willed, destructive and a danger to friend, foe or neutral when his mind is set on a single goal.

Despite this, Pyre isn't a dark hearted person. He believes that everyone will be happier in a world freed from restriction of authority, and refuses to see any bad in the rebellion's intentions. Beneath the selfish desire to be a hero, he fights for what he feels is right. He idolises the rebel leader and fights using a similar, if somewhat less refined style. He tries to compensate for his lack of finesse with brute strength, something he has in spades. He isn't too good at solving problems and his morals are kind of flexible...but his heart's in the right place.

Pyre is a loud and obnoxious combatant who treats battle as though it were a game. As a typcal W-type he gets a rush from fighting and cares little for his own safety or that of those around him when he gets into the flow of things. He is a skilled fire twirler who weilds a double-ended flame stick like a spear. His stance makes it hard for him to attack quickly, but his wild swings pack a real punch. The real secret to his strength is the flammable oils he can spray from various weapon compartments built into his body. Once he covers the opponent with this, his firey strikes will cause violent combustion, allowing him to deal additional damage and lock the opponent into defense. This makes him a momentum based attacker who punishes the opponent hard for not avoiding his strikes. Even blocking can be a bad idea, as his flames allow him to trap guarding opponents in stun and deal a lot of guard bar damage with his crushing strings.

After his initial battle with Ginnigan, Pyre felt something strange when fighting him, a sensation that kept him coming back for more. Compared to many other combatants, Pyre feels alive when facing off against Ginnigan, and admits that he's the only N-type he's ever seen who is worthy of admiration (but is Ginnigan truly an N-type?)

Other rivals for Pyre include Yawn - who he frequently bullies - and anyone from the Holy Forces. He is one of the main characters in Exetype's storyline.

--notes--

When creating Pyre, I not only wanted a character who could play the opposite to Ginnigan, but also one who might represent the opposing argument in Exetype's represented theme. As an authoritarian myself, I notice a lot of argument between conservative people and those who prefer to live for the moment, and it's fascinating to try to view this argument from both sides. While Ginnigan is supposed to be a character who can stand in the middle and present and unbiassed view, Pyre is the more extreme end of the scale, towards the view of ultimate freedom as happiness. (And I'm sure you can all guess what Yawn is meant to represent then.) So technically he's not Ginnigan's opposite, he's Yawn's opposite. However, his method of thinking is more opposite to Ginnigan, while his values mirror those of Yawn. Even though I don't agree with people like Pyre personally, I want to try to represent a character like him. I'll try not to be biassed when it comes to the writing.

Pyre is a red panda, and his power source is heat/burning fuel. His legend counterpart is the Red Boy from Journey to the West.

edit: fixed some minor anatomy stuff. Made his arms a bit thicker and adjusted his knees.

Great design, and amazing work on everything that you've done with this project!
I'm no expert, but I think it may be wise to change at least the tone of either his skin or his clothing. They seem to bleed together and look like one big thing.

ooo
i'm lovin him.
i always like to see rivals like so.

and if yawn's the opposite to him, and Ginnigan is in the middle.
i predict yawn and Pyre are gonna have a deep battle and Ginnigan may interrupt.
if that's not to happen then it was just a thought. which i probably shouldn't be giving i think

Very nice colour scheme and line smoothness as usual, Ry. The belt was a cool idea <3
My only concern is the colour of the red "cape" in relation to his legs. It's kindof hard to tell what's what at first glance... I'd suggest making the cape thing a little darker?
Fantastic as usual though.

Awesome work yet again man! I can really begin to visualize his attack type now! He almost seems like the type to have one or two aerial ranged fire bomb attacks if the opponent was tougher than he thought, or perhaps as a starter move to lead into close range melee/weapon moves.

You changed his tail a bit, and it looks awesome. Are the two blades on his staff going to be on fire btw?

Thanks. XD

They aren't on fire all the time. They'll emit flame only when needed, and the fire is going to be on a separate sprite layer anyway.

I like how you include lots of your thought-process/development notes in the description too, it's always interesting to see how people reach the end result of a character.

Eventually I hope to impliment something like that. Exetype was originally planned to be an RPG. It'd be a shame to let the plot go to waste.

Not sure I ever said this, but I frigging love seeing these. Now I'm not a big fighting game fan, truth be told a six year old could school me, but I love the style Ryanide puts out here. Very Guilty Gear-ish, and in all the good ways: a larger scale but with a ton of detail. Also the amount of detail he puts into the backstory just appeals to a massive RPG-nerd like me.

RinTheYordle [2010-08-12 19:09:35 +0000 UTC]

Awesome stuff. Cant wait to see the final product either, and more work going into the other extypes.

Minor thing I noticed right away if you dont mind me saying so... his left leg (not to us, his actual left leg) is a bit high compared to his right? Or maybe its my eyes playing with me but it looks like his foot is up too high compared to the other. I know making sprites is very time consuming, so Im curious if you just rotate him a little bit that he should be balanced again?

Again maybe its just my eyes playing tricks on me but that was the only thing I noticed.

Other than that his "cockiness" really stands out with his stance and his facial expression, and the added details I know will look great when you have them completed. Its very inspiring seeing all these and I'd love to make my own kind of fan character at some point... maybe even pixelated too to try something different. These characters are so interesting. Keep up the awesome work.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Ryanide In reply to RinTheYordle [2010-08-13 01:24:06 +0000 UTC]

that's forshortening. the leg in front usually has to appear slightly longer than the one behind, due to the 'ball' of his foot being closer to the viewer.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

RinTheYordle In reply to Ryanide [2010-08-13 02:19:57 +0000 UTC]

Oh I understand that, but the leg in front seems to be higher up, than the one in back... like, up in the air, like its floating, not grounded was all I meant

Again I might've just seen wrong was all. Sorry for the confusedness :3 I think it might just be the way Im looking on it on my comp.

Either way like I said, amazing work. Just a small thing I noticed. :3

tjprower In reply to RinTheYordle [2010-08-14 01:59:16 +0000 UTC]

What you are noticing is perspective. He's standing in the 3rd dimension, but we can only view him in the 2nd. That gives the odd impression that his legs don't match. Had he been standing in a viewable 3-D environment, his proportions would be perfect.

YES! Was waiting to see this guy! ;v; Love his design so muuuch~ Though he sounds like the type of character I have a hard time playing as. >:

To relate him to a BB character, would you say he's like a Hakumen / Iron Tager-esq character? Heh, I've always had a hard time playing as them, and much prefer characters like Noel and Rachel. xD

But anywho, I'm excited to see the rest of the cast in all their beautiful, sprited glory~ <3

Ryanide In reply to Mukmuk [2010-08-12 18:46:30 +0000 UTC]

Oh yeah. and Pyre hits the guard bar really, really hard. He can get a guard crush faster than any other character due to raw guard damage off random pokes and strings.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 0

Ryanide In reply to Mukmuk [2010-08-12 18:41:43 +0000 UTC]

He's nothing like Tagar and only sort of like Hakumen. Pyre has average movement speed, low attacking speed on anything other than weak moves, and relatively bad combo ability. He does a lot of damage with only small combos, but his moves are much more meaty than Hakumen and full of frame advantage on block. He also has a lot of midrange projectile type attacks designed for trapping and super armor moves. So essentially he's a slow rushdown character as opposed to your regular fast rushdown character. He also gets a lot of residual damage from chip and guard crush.

Basically I want to make him a character who can really put the pressure on opponents who block, but has trouble dealing with outright evasion.

If you like Rachel though, I think you'll really like Yawn.

Yeah of course, there are a few characters you might like if you're into speedy types, Ginnigan being one of them. For swordplay, you'll probably enjoy Seeker.

Ooh, swordplay. Yes.

Btw, is this only going to be for PC, or do you have some special plan to get it onto XBLA or PSN?

Ryanide In reply to TheGiik [2010-08-12 16:56:36 +0000 UTC]

Currently it's only in development for PC. But if it turns out to be popular we might think about porting it to other systems.

LazarCotoron [2010-08-12 16:39:19 +0000 UTC]

Pyre's thinking is more along the lines of how I view the world. I'm against authoritarian 'let big brother handle it' style governance, because every time I've been at the mercy of having to have something handled by big brother... nothing happens. Less extreme than he is possibly, but it would be hard to say given the limited view of the story I have overall at this point.

In a very real sense, I believe conflict to be part of the very nature of existence, and while I am all for people working together for anything, I also accept that sometimes people will also refuse to meet each other in the middle. There's a lot of science fiction written on Utopian societies, and one of the recurring concepts is that they have created their own villains by forcing life into a mold that it doesn't necessarily fit in. By crossing into this territory, you're making interesting points about life and how we choose to live together, regardless of your favored stance on the issues. And by choosing to have representations of the different view points that are all at least semi-positive, you've created realism by allowing that any of them COULD be "right", or even perhaps all are to some extent, and that concept of right is subject to what is going on around them.

I fight, and believe in fighting because every time I've tried to follow the rules and go through the channels nothing has been fixed. And then, as though the universe thought it was funny to conspire against me, those times where I was a little out of line was when big brother stepped in to remind me of his 'authority.' And the lesson I carry with me from all of that is authority is only as useful as its enforcement, and its enforcement is only as good as the people working to enforce it combined with the willingness of people to be subject to it.

It's interesting stuff. Perhaps I think about it too much?
