Description Ok so I want you guys to know that while I draw Invincible I have ideas from time to time to put into Invincible, sometimes I call up Robert and let him know and he says yes or no, or other times I just go ahead and draw something in. And of course sometimes he likes them, and sometimes he dislikes them. Here are three examples from some newer issues where he wasn’t too fond of them and asked them to be changed. And I’m fine with it, it’s great working with Robert and I’m glad he puts up with me even though I do this kind of stuff.

1. First off is the designing of the Evil invincibles for issue 58. He said just go to town on them. Due to time constraints trying to get the books out on time I was just designing as I drew the panels.

The first one is household items Mark, his first costume. I thought it was a cool idea kinda like Flaxan mark, or the burned Mark from the Viltrum prison, it just shows the reader there is a back story without telling them the story. I thought Mark stuck in his first ever made costume would be interesting. Like maybe Nolan left much earlier than he did in our dimension therefore he hasn’t met Art the Taylor yet.
And now we have Prophet mask Invincible with swords. Yeah I agree with Robert, dumb idea. heh.

Mark with a baseball hat on I thought was cool, like he’s still working at burger mart and wants to advertise a bit, heh, ok dumb idea. BUT Robert did say in the script to draw an evil Invincible with a “cap” on his head. He meant have the costume cover his hair, not an actual cap. I’ve never heard the term cap for how he wanted it so I drew it how I pictured it.

And the last one I still think is a good idea, Zombie Mark! Robert wasn’t too into it because he’s done quite a lot with Zombies and he really doesn’t want them overused in his other books. I can see his point. But it still woulda been fun to draw him fighting.

2. Now below the Evil Invincibles is a panel where I broke the panel border with a butt squeeze! Revolutionary I say! Robert’s problem with it was it looked like the panel border was riding up Eve’s backside. I can see how that could be a problem, a papercut there would be super painful.

3. And now the last one, this one made it all the way to colors before it was cut. I love the mohawk evil Invincible, I think he’s nuts, just completely crazy and totally punk rock. He not only demolishes everything in his path like the other evil Invincibles but he also desacrates when he can, and I think he’d hate the world so much that he WOULD jam the torch up lady liberties bum. Robert thought it ruined the scene, just too distracting.

And that’s my most recent bad ideas. More coming soon, probably.

This is very cool! Thanks for showing all of these behind-the-scenes art pieces. It's like having DVD extras on the internet. ^^

I still think the zombie Mark should make an appearance sooner or later.

Thank you, mate, for sharing these outtakes. After I read your description of what Robert saw in that Eve panel and then looked at it again I burst into riotous laughter.

Also, I didn`t even notice the torch in Liberty`s butt until I looked for what was wrong in the image. I kinda like that little bit of rebellious sacrilege.

Also, dig the Prophet-mask, swords not needed on Invincible, but that Mask is great

You should have just given all the evil invincibles goatees. No one would have argued.

Man i really love the zombie and punk one. Those are crazy cool. I saw you mentioned above that Robert wants to keep it serious at times so i can understand why he wouldn't want to go with them. I sure hope you get to use them eventually.

I'm not caught up but it sounds like after #50, things go a little crazy. I've always loved the lighter tone of the book but i'm excited to see what happens.

He has talked a lot about keeping things serious at times, there is a time and place for funny but you gotta keep things serious too. He really doesn't want people to think Invincible is some silly book. It should be as respected as Spidey or Superman.

Heh, again, that's why he has more readers than I. Although, I respect the Venture Bros. as much as I respect Supes or Spidey, and that show is hilarious!
Awesome shit man. Someday, when you're slightly less busy, I wanna hire you for another H/S cover.

Honestly, I would say I respect it MORE than Spidey or Superman, because the stories actually have weight. The stories you guys put within those pages feel a lot more personal than those others which never seem to make meaningful changes for more than a year or two at most.

NuclearConvoy In reply to LightBombMike [2009-03-29 17:13:17 +0000 UTC]

And you just nailed my biggest problem with most Marvel and DC comics and why I tend to have trouble sticking with any stories told past the initial story arch that I get into a book on.

Like Superman right now is really interesting, but once the situation with New Krypton being opposite Earth`s orbit and such is resolved, Supes will come back to Earth and Mon-El will go away and I`ll be bored of Superman-related stories again.

LightBombMike In reply to NuclearConvoy [2009-03-29 17:21:01 +0000 UTC]

yeah, that is the thing. Those characters are generational. You can latch onto them for a few years, but at a certain point, they have to return them to their iconic status so that some kid on the other side of the world can know all about that character.

Yeah, but Invin cible seems to be about constant progress forward. I mean, I`ve just recently started in on Kirkman`s Invinciverse, and I love it, so correct me if I`m wrong.

Zombie and the 'rophep' Mark are the only ones that I don't like.. as far as Eve goes, the only bad idea and getting her injured and out of the book for months..

>.<

So I hope that doesn't happens..
