Description
So someone asked if I’d participate in some chalk drawing that was going on over at a nearby Elementary School. A couple local artists came by and did their thing to celebrate the contest the kids are going to be doing here pretty soon called Reflections. I use to do those art contests back when i was in School and I loved those things. So I had to go show my support and do some art. I’ve never done any chalk drawing before, it’s always fun trying new ways to draw. My Draw night buddy Jon Diesta gave me the tip to wrap my fingers with masking tape for the blending. It helped a lot and added quite a lot to the piece. It was a little intimidating at first laying down the chalk but once ya get a feel for what the chalk can do you just run with it. The knight is supposed to be wearing a helmet with horns, but yeah, it looks like a Cowboy hat, ah well. It took me exactly 2 hours start to finish.A few people mentioned I’ll be giving kids nightmares with this thing, to which I said “BAH, whatever!” The only reason I chose to draw a Dragon was because that’s pretty much all I drew as a kid. So if I dug it as a kid, I bet these kids might like it too. Here’s some photos for ya.

Dude, I can't even get pastels to look good let alone chalk. That takes talent. My hats off to you. *tips hat*

This is absolutely amazing. I love the scythe tail that the Dragon has. Poor slayer doesn't stand a chance.

Wow, I'm STUNNED! That's amazing! and your first time with chalk? That's very encouraging for me You see I am thinking of embarking on a big chalk project very soon, but I've never done any serious chalk stuff before. Seeing this...I thought I should ask you some questions! Hope that's okay!
1. Is the drawing process with chalk much the same as with pencil or other mediums, ie. guidelines, lineart, colour, shading? Or are there different, more efficient ways of going about it?
2. Could a piece like this be completed by a single person over the course of a single day, taking just short breaks? (Actually the size I am thinking of is about 2mx2m, so quite a bit bigger.)
3. What did you use to cushion your knees; do you think a towel would be sufficient?
4. Do you know if other kinds of weather besides rain have an effect on chalk artwork and if so how could you protect it while working?
5. What kind of chalk is that? What brand/set I mean. It looks like it did an excellent job and has a good range of colours! Do you know if you can buy chalk sets anywhere with even more colour choices?
Sorry if that's a bit much! I'm asking a few other people too but I would dearly love to hear your input, 'cause I was blown away by this piece. Thanks alot! (:

I think I used pastel chalk by Prismacolor, and it took me a a couple hours, no towels or anything, just sitting, squating, whatever.

Dude. Congratulations on discovering the freedom of chalk art! I've got two girls and we go to town on the sidewalk in front of the house. Gotten so folks stop at the beginning of summer and ask when the chalk drawings will be starting up. I just wish I could find more colors but then that's part of the fun too! Nice one you've got there! We do a lot of mermaids these days but I'm not art directin'.

I wonder if one of your fans took out that concrete panel from the sidewalk and has it hanging in his room as we speak...

Dude, nightmares lol some people amaze me. My boy's 5 and he digs stuff like that, he just thinks they're dino's or something.
It looks pretty cool, but you're right the helmet does kinda look like a cowboy hat lol.

only problem with that, is hoping that someone doesn't come along and use a permanent marker to draw a penis on the Dragon/Dino/Monster/thing.

WOW! I hear what you're saying about new techniques. That's how I felt about Prisma colors. I've done digital coloring for too long and so I picked up the marker and learned what I could do and just went with it! Awesome Sidewalk chalk artwork!!!

It's lovely!
And do not underestimate the kids in the Elementary schools - usually they have already seen the bloodiest facts of life . In the movies and games.

Cool stuff man... I've done a few of those festivals in Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo. It's fun, but tiring on your body. Instead of masking tape though, I prefer to wear latex gloves.

No, I didn't draw crouching like that the whole time, just at the end there so I wasn't sitting on the art. I was sitting most of the time.

That's crazy! I've watched people do this and I've kind of wanted to do it myself but I'm not too great with chalks.
Anyways, the colors are great and the little figure still looks like he might have horns on his helmet.
