Description Page 4 of issue 40. This is how I work, very sketchy pencils and then ink right over it. I just need enough info with the pencils so I know who and what is where and then I do all the detail with inks.

wow man, it's really surprising that you work that way and the finished product looks as slick as it does, I'm sure it's a great time saver as well. Very interesting, great work Ryan!

Amazing process, its so cool to see how you work. Your pages are always so balanced I wish Invincible came out in B&W.

^^ glad I'm not the only person who skips the finer details on the pencils (albiet at a lesser degree of skill)

do you ever mess up the inks? that leap from pencils to inks seems crazy O_O

Sure I mess up, nothing a little white out can't take care of.

Well, I don't have to tell you how cool this is, so I won't. I will say what is cool is that you have such a handle on your tools, (is there any way to say that without sounding dirty?).

My question to you is, do you find that you come closer to the vision in your head if you ink over the sketch? How close do you come to what you intend?

RyanOttley In reply to BrattyBen [2007-04-14 14:09:54 +0000 UTC]

I don't know about that. I guess it's true. Mostly it helps with speed and helps with keeping me from getting bored.

BrattyBen In reply to RyanOttley [2007-04-15 06:14:19 +0000 UTC]

I really have to try that. I find that I like pencilling and getting it all sorted out, but when I ink, I feel that I'm not really drawing, just kinda going over what I went over before. I really think I could benefit from this technique if I just trust myself a bit more.

When you first started doing this, did you kinda feel aprehensive, or did you kinda take to it pretty easily?

Great work, brotha.

How long does it normally take you to pencil a page completely?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RyanOttley In reply to Significant-Pie [2007-04-14 14:10:25 +0000 UTC]

Anywhere from an hour to 6 hours. It all depends on the page.

I use bristol board from blueline. And Ink with Staedtler pens and brush pens.

Truly great page, Wya! I usually do all my layouts on 8.5X11 in pen and blow them up to 11X17 and lightbox them, but your way seems a lot faster and a bit more fun. What's your average page speed?

Was your intention to make the mini-tentacled brains look menacing? Because to me, they look delicious!
And yes, it's awesome to see the confidence of a pro like you.
It reminds me of the incredibly sparse pencils of John Buscema, the jewel of the Silver Age.
Fist time I saw them, I thought... How in Hades can he go from these few chicken scratches to this awesome pages? But he did, just as you do.
I've already told you you are the XXI century's Steve Ditko.
Party daily!

I really enjoy the choices you're making with line weights.

You're also making great value decisions; not killing yourself with things that are better conveyed in the colour stage...

Are you familiar with the work of Windsor McKay (creator of Little Nemo in Slumberland)?

Your work has a similar feel to it (imo); lovely.

I also enjoyed your journal, very sharp wit you have there.

I'm going to have to pick up a copy of this comic (never read it).

I agree, I don't think you draw like McKay (necessarily) I just see the same respect for line.

You set down clear guidelines and you stick to 'em, consequently making your work very readable (not busy).

best.

Our working methods are almost identical.

Do you do any kind of lightboxing on your pencils? If you do would you recommend it?
