Description Thought I’d post some scans of this cover showing a little process. I don’t think I’ve showed them before. This is going to be the cover to the Invincible handbook trade paperback. Also we have a poster and a shirt coming out in December with this image. Thanks everybody!

Your skills with multi-person perspectives are top notch. You always make me realize that there are things I am missing without formal training. Keep up the good work. The comic book rocks.

Formal training? Just hit them anatomy books and fill them sketchbooks, that's what I did.

I think mark's expression in this is saying "I want a motorcycle. I want one now. Vroom vroom."

If invincible had a motorcycle/mobile (yeah, yeah, he can fly, but still...what if), what do ya think it'd look like?

HAHAHAH! Oh man, I need to make my own Invincible toy designs, an Invincicopter, an Invicycle, an Invincipotty. That'd be sweet!

INVINCIPOTTY! I want kids now so i can have an INVINCIPOTTY and potty train them with THAT!

Real life has taken Invincible away from me for so long BUT NO LONGER!!

Poster = instant buy. Hopefully I can keep it in pristine condition so I can get it autographed by you without you asking "what the hell did you do to it?" in the process.

RPG8305 In reply to RPG8305 [2007-10-26 21:24:32 +0000 UTC]

No. Actually I caught you at SDCC right as you were about to leave your booth but you did let me pull out my Invincible Library and get it signed by you real quick before you left, which was great, thank you.

I just have really bad luck with posters. I use tacky puddy to hold them up (no holes) but they keep falling off the walls of my new apartment and some are starting to look a little worse for wear. So that would be why it would look bad if I brought it to you to sign.

i love when you post you pencil ryan , When im drawing pages , i have pencils by you Mike Weiringo and john Romita jr running as a slide show on my computer screen .

also i have a question.... have you tried drawing on a cintiq monitor yet? and if so what do you think of
it ?

RyanOttley In reply to HEROBOY [2007-10-21 23:19:26 +0000 UTC]

Havn't tried it yet. I want to, they look great!

HEROBOY In reply to RyanOttley [2007-10-28 15:42:39 +0000 UTC]

yeah they are great , i will post a cintiq drawing i did this week sometime . i find they save a lot of time , your drawing right on the monitor which is great, and you can make adjustments easily at any point of the process. the only way i can see it being a detriment to artist such as yourself, is that you no longer have an original page to sell, which i think is a lucrative part of the biz . but over all the cintiq saves time , im glad they gave me one at work !! -david g

Thank you for posting your process! It's always cool to see how the pros go about stuff.

Do you use an HB for your initial pencils, or do you use something softer?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RyanOttley In reply to astroXLR [2007-10-18 14:57:06 +0000 UTC]

I use 2b for sketching and finishes.

astroXLR In reply to RyanOttley [2007-10-19 13:30:58 +0000 UTC]

Really? I'd figure that the overabundance of graphite would make the inking process harder... How do you keep yourself from becoming too heavy-handed too soon?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RyanOttley In reply to astroXLR [2007-10-19 14:06:12 +0000 UTC]

I ink my sketches. My finished pencils are very loose, I don't use a heavy hand.

So how many virgins are usually sacrificed to you before a piece like this gets finished? My guess is five, but I dunno if you deal in fractions.

And yeah, you ink like a mofo, but there's definitely a lotta OOMPH (BANG/ZOOM) to your pencils too. You oughta see how far someone like Bill could take your stuff from just the pencil stage sometime. Might be interesting.

I know you like leaving your pencil in with your marker sketches sometimes, and that seems to come out pretty nice don't ya think?

seriously though id love to see a invicinvible books just in pencils...maybe one issue or a flashback something...your pencils are soo expressive...the immortal pose at the bottom is my fave...of course the black dudes are in the back...they must be from maryland.

RyanOttley In reply to Wingthe3rd [2007-10-17 23:46:17 +0000 UTC]

HA! Right. Actually everyone is far in the background except the 4 most important characters. Glad you like the pencils, or course my pencils from the sequentials are not this tight. They are REALLY loose, so it'd be wierd to have an issue of just them.

Wingthe3rd [2007-10-17 16:53:51 +0000 UTC]

you using a blue pencil with this? or you sketching it initially with a pencil?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RyanOttley In reply to Wingthe3rd [2007-10-17 23:43:28 +0000 UTC]

I stopped using blue pencil. It seems like everything flows better without it, and when I erase I don't see pencil anymore, so it's nice.
