For that, you have my respect

Simple and pretty. A good start for any amateur artist to see what can be done.
Yes it's not exactly a tutorial, but rather a demonstration or example.
Keep creating ryky.
Even if no one understands what you're creating and who you're creating it for.

Hey, one last reply, as I wanted to say, your work isn't dull. It would look better with some colourful backgrounds though!
The only reason I responded to your comment in the first place was because I felt you were unfair to the artist.Β
Just wanted to say good luck on your journey as an artist! And have a look around for more tutorials that suit your taste n-n
Sorry for any harsh words etc. Just don't think this amazing artist deserves the negativity.
Hope it all goes well, and good luck

Don't be disrespectful to the creator, just use the images to follow along.

He/she is not being disrespectful in any way. People who are not as artistically talented will have trouble following a tutorial that does not explain how to achieve the effects being presented to them.

How am I supposed to follow along if i don't know what layer type to use, or what brushes to use. "use the images to follow along" makes no sense.

wezlingtondrawsstuff In reply to MermaidWitch94 [2015-10-24 21:38:32 +0000 UTC]
layer type: transparent and just draw over
brush type: several, keep changing your brush type and the opacityΒ
then just do what the images say

You don't need to use a sarcastic nature to ask that kind of thing.
Just ask politely if the artists has any tips. Don't be so direct and disrespectful.

I can be sarcastic if I please, thank you very much. If you don't like it, I really don't care. I've seen so many of their tutorials with no directions whatsoever that I'm getting tired of it. At this point, the main reason I still watch this artist is because I like their art, but confusing tutorials are really annoying.

They aren't meant for you to copy. They are here for inspiration. This artist didn't create these for you. They are created for everyone, something that the artist has spent time on. If you need someone to tell you how to do something step by step in detail this isn't the place? There are many many other places to go and loads that also don't have words. Don't take it out on the artist. They do a ton of these. And I'm really greatful, it's inspiring.Β
I'm not going to argue with you any more. Just don't be so rude. It's immature and disrespectful.Β

I don't want to copy them, I want to learn. I can't learn from visuals only.

Most of these tutorials are just eyecandy. His interest is not really to teach, but to fish for views. Which is fine, it's his page.

Seriously there is no need to be sarcastic. It doesn't have instrutions because the artist wants you to experiment and find your own style with this technique.
If you had actaully looked through the tutorial folder in ryky's gallery before all of this, he has done previous tutorials similar to this one. Again it doesn't have specific instructions but again, it's a technique not for something you copy. I understand that everyone learns differently to each other, but there's no need to be rude and demanding about it in the first place.

That's a really pathetic reason. If the guy wants you to 'experiment', tell me; why don't they just post reference? Instead of this Chris Hart rubbish?

The tutorial acts as a reference base as well. It's not just there to teach/show you how to do something but to also help as a guide and reference. Most 'Tutorials' that you find here in DA are actually pictures/step-by-step reference with little or no instructions at all. There are also search engines; DA is not the only place to look for references/tutorials. Youtube can also be a good source for tutorials as well, as most of them have voice overs about what happening on the screen.
The reason I say to experiment, is because it helps to develop an art style or a process. It's the main way to learn how a person does things.

"Most 'tutorials' here on DA are actually step-by-step pictures with little to no instruction at all."
I've stated this before, then they're not tutorials. Not instructing the reader with a tutorial is about as broken as you can get. What you've said boils down to "People can go google and find actual tutorials on places like Youtube! People should experiment, and find out for themselves!" Which is basically my entire point. The last part you say on "This is the main way to learn how a person does things," Is full of shit. Learning how a person does things? If you're referring to this tutorial here, this doesn't show how a person does things at all. Literally explains nothing, somehow your supposed to just make the edges purple! "I'm not gonna explain how, or even elude to how... just make 'em purple!" I don't know about you, but that's what I'm looking for in my tutorials.Β
TL;DR - You've repeated my point and have only proven how ultimately useless these 'tutorials' are/

For the second time, I'M NOT LOOKING TO COPY ANYTHING. I look for tutorials to learn and help develop my art style, which in my opinion is pretty bland at the moment. I drew a picture of Scarlet Witch, messed around with the layer types until I was satisfied, then I look at it a week ago and decide I don't like the magic effects which is what led me here. There isn't even an explanation in the artist's comments. How is ANYONE supposed to learn from this? It's a prime example of "Show, don't tell", which is annoying.

I agree. It's not a tutorial, it's a step by step. Which is fine, I do like step by steps and people may learn from it, but a tutorial is supposed to explain something, not just show it.
Of course thats purely semantics, but it still bothers me that its called a tutorial and then doesn't explain anything :')

'-' tbh most of these "tutorials" are step by step to achieve a certain result...
and a lot of people just starting out will prob have a difficult time trying to figure out how this or that was done ^^'
(and i mean no disrespect to the artist i like his work)
but it might stump people that wanna learn the how....
like this particular deviation...you can get similar results by using things like...
a round semi-solid brush...blur tool...overlay layer...add layer for glowy effect...
adjust the round brush into a small one and make lines and then you can use a soft brush over that to create the glow....
but if you wanna learn something in general....i recommend gathering resources on the subject you wanna learn about...
learn from your favourite artists and how they draw/paint things

Again, no need to be rude about it. I'm only trying to give some advice in helping to find your own style.
The reason why ryky does his tutorials like this is because he cannot accommodate to everyones learning. Most people who learn visually would be ok with this type of instruction giving. I use ryky tutorials for some of my work, as it's a good source to use, but I don't sit complaining about no instructions. I learn to create my own style and technique with it.
The reason why there may not be anything written may also be because he physically hasn't got the time to sit there and write it out.
By the sounds of it you are more of a step-by-step learner with written instructions, in which case here is not the place for you at the moment.
Ryky has learnt this technique by experimenting with paint brushes and layering effects.
Here is another tutorial he has done on Magic effects.
He has given a visual step-by-step on the type of magic, then at the bottom he has given what brushes he has used. For Example > the first type of brush could be used for step 1 and 2 possibly 3, then second brush; used for step 3 again and maybe step 4 and finally whatever is going to be your last layer put it on luminosity.
Again I cannot stress on EXPERIMENTING with your work and program more enough. Also if you're stuck, upload a screen shot onto your DA and place it in the comments of the tutorial you're using. There will be people around to give critque as well as some opinions.
