I didn't really like the episode to be honest... it was cute but it just failed to be non-filler in my book (except for the very end)
If they were going to go in this direction, considering how mysterious the relation between him and his mother was, they should've cut the "filler" scenes out (the sports and stuff, make it happen off-screen) and treated it more like a "Are you sure you want to do this/You can only do this once kinda thing" and focus more on seriousness/emotion instead of putting it at the very end.
Then again, there are several other episodes I didn't like that many others enjoy, so I won't spread hate towards anyone. (:
