Ben knew he really shouldn't be as happy as he was with the newest addition to the team.

Rook was out of his proper time, stuck, unable to reach his friends and family, most of them out there only knew the plumber as his current child-self. The Revonnahgander was awkward with human culture and was really weird cause he didn't use contractions. Nobody would take his time travel story seriously.

Being stuck in this time made the older male sad a lot, Ben could see it in his odd but awesome-looking eyes. Every once and a while Ben would say or do something and those eyes to look at him in a way that Ben knew Rook wasn't really seeing him, but the Ben that was Rook's partner.

Rook would tell him about his future self, the good and the bad, all said with such fondness that made Ben want to become the Ben 10 Rook saw when he stared into space.

But even if it was selfish, Ben was happy to have Rook with them and hoped Rook would always stay with him, even if it meant the Revonnahgander would never make it back to the right timeline. It was like having the awesome big brother he always wanted, the kind he thought Kevin would have turned out to be.

Someone he could trust and count on when the young hero felt the responsibility of being the Omnitrix wielder brought crashing down around him.

He couldn't really help it, he was only ten years old, too young to be thrown the destiny laid out for him. Too young to reach for a future version of himself that he only knew one point of view on. Too young to know what the longing in Rook's unfocused eyes really meant.

Too young to realize a broken heart breaks a little more everytime his big green eyes looks up at Rook and speaks, with all the love and tenderness only a child's heart can give...

"Dude! I love you so much! More than anything else! You're totally the best big brother ever!"

Too young to know those words ring in his big brother's head as he hugs the older male's waist. In Rook's head, a deeper voice whispers; 'Partner' replaces 'Brother' and the phantom tingle of a lips against his from a lover causes him to hug the child back tightly.

And he chooses to mourn the lover lost, his broken heart, in order to protect the child in his arms from the destiny rushing towards him.

Something that hit me a while back when playing the first Omniverse game; a lil what if Rook got stuck in the past and stayed with little Ben....with a slight Brooken twist.

and just in case the ending line is confusing, Rook's chose to bury his feelings for the Ben from his time, in order to become the guiding light I think Ben really needed through most of the series. Original, Alien Force, Ultimate Alien etc. but that just my personal opinion on the matter.

In Ultimate Alien episode 'Forge of Creation' Little Ben introduced us to a depth level of Ben's personality that is sadly ignored in both canon and fanon. He's not just an arrogant jerk with a heart of gold and the emotional spectrum of a rusty teaspoon. He acts how he needs to in order to get from one day to the next, when it seems that the while universe is out to kill him and everyone he cares about.

Also the bravado he puts on, even after he's been put through the ringer is not just for him, but for his team mates, friends, family, allies. So that they won't worry or fear the next baddie that comes along to ruin everything.

I think only a chosen few can really see Ben under all his bravado and arrogance armor and cause Ben to react out side his normal facade.

Those few being- *record scratches and erases the several more paragraphs she had typed before she caught herself* Gah I got off on a rant and head canon roll. Nevermind, that insanity.

Though for those that for some reason are still interested in whatever demented screed I have to spout from my shaken, not stirred and completely mixed up mind, I can probably find a beaten up, old, kreaky, rickety soapbox and put it up on my tumblr.
