Description So, as promised , here's how to make your own Game of Thrones Dragon Egg with nothing but paper, glue and play-doh.

There you have it: an easy to make $20 dragon egg.
Hope you all like the mini-tutorial!
Please, leave your thoughts and suggestions.

  • How Heavy is it?
    It weighs exactly 360 grams.
You can fill it with gesso if you want something heavier.
TIP: if you fill it only 1/4 of the way through, it'll behave like a weeble

  • How fragile is it?
The papier-machê itself is OUTSTANDINGLY strong, so it depends solely on the kind of play-doh you're using.
If you want something really sturdy, you can use polymer clay or Fimo and bake it, leaving a small gap for the air inside to expand. The papier-mache will withstand the heat, don't worry.
I suggest making them out of cold porcelain (biscuit clay) though, you can find it for sale online, but here's a good and easy DIY recipe.
It behaves a lot like Fimo and doesn't need baking.
Cold porcelain is VERY resistant, so if you're making them with/for your kids this is the best choice, hands down.

  • How do I make the scales?
A batch of different sized leaf shaped cookie cutters  will do an excellent job. That's what I used
You can buy them online here .
No, I'm not getting any money for this. If you know a better place you can leave a comment below!)

it'll take a while ; clay stored away, and other things are crushing my free time, sadly.

Great! You can also use crumpled paper and tape to get the basic shape, instead of a ballon

It's pretty simple, really. They've been using this technique in China for thousands of years, even to create armour. If you try it once, you'll see how simple it is!

I'm sooooooo going to do this !!!!!!

Is there a way to make it more heavy? like fill it with something, also to make it less fragile?

Best regards

ryoshi-un In reply to KDOriginal [2013-12-04 15:34:15 +0000 UTC]

You can fill it with plaster or gesso after popping the balloon, but it's a nice weight as it is.

It's not really fragile depending on the type of clay ou play-doh you use.
If you use cold porcelain, it'll last forever, even you you drop it from up high.

You can even use fimo and bake it, leaving a small hole for the air inside to expand.

Wow this is amazing! So going to try this for L.A.R.P.ing! Hope I can do the paint job as good as you!
I kinda have two questions:
1) How heavy is it?
2) How fragile is it?

Instead of play-doh I'm trying it with modelling clay :3

ryoshi-un In reply to Otakucosplay16 [2013-11-21 20:16:08 +0000 UTC]

It's very light and sturdy. That's what's good about papier mache. \o\
If you use clay, you can even bake it with no problem!

The play-doh I used gets kind of fragile after some time, so priming is a good idea to avoid flaking, but you should be fine with clay.

I'm going to try this soon...just getting everything together.  Instead of buying play-doh, I'm going to try making it instead.  Here's the recipe I'm going to try:

3-4 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 cups salt
1 1/2 tablespoons cream of tartar
2 tablespoons of vegetable oil
2 cups hot water
food coloring or unsweetened kool-aid

Mix three cups of flour together with the salt and cream of tartar in the bowl of your stand-type mixer. Add the oil and water and knead with a dough hook in your electric stand-type mixer for five to six minutes. (If you are kneading by hand, knead for eight to ten minutes.) Add more flour to get a soft, workable dough.  Store the dough in a sealed container to keep it from becoming dry. If it becomes too dry, place it back in the mixer bowl and knead in a dribble of water.  (makes 3.5 lbs)

When finished sculpting, bake in a 250 degree oven until hardened.  (Baking times will vary depending on the size of the objects baked, from 20 to 30 minutes.)  They won’t bake through but the heat of the oven will put a hard case on them and preserve them.  In time they will dry completely and be as hard as a rock.

I am currently working on an egg! The tutorial is great and I am pretty happy with my egg so far, but since everyone does things slightly different and uses slightly different materials, I just want to throw a few tips/warnings out there based upon my eggs-perience

1.  In the papier maché phase, the ink from the newsprint will get stuck on your pot (and maybe your blender!) and you will have to scrub REALLY hard to get it off.  Maybe use toilet paper instead.

2.  Make more pulp than you think you'll need.  I thought I had enough, but when I made my dough I had a moment of panic because it looked like I didn't have enough once I rolled it out (turned out I had just enough... whew).

3.  The papier maché split near the top opening where I left a hole for popping the balloon inside.  It works to push the egg back into position and use a hot glue gun to seal the splits shut.

4.  Don't buy cheap dollar store "play-doh"!  I just put my play doh scales on, and after letting it dry overnight, I found that they were all falling off! I was going to glue-gun them back down, but it seemed pretty hard to save them and they actually shrunk, which left some gaps between the scales where you can see the papier maché underneath.  So buy the real play doh, make your scales big enough/overlap them enough to hide any gaps, and really smush the flat part down (as emphasized in the tutorial!).  Time to find out if real play doh makes an improvement... I'm off to the store to pick some up today!  I'll post an update once I am done with the play-doh and painting stages.

Thanks ryoshi-un  for a great tutorial and project!
