you've darkened it..
the contrast is definitely better now, and the background looks better than before, but you miss out on the transparency of the veil she's holding. it's so dark here that it seems almost opaque..

did you digitally darken it or did you edit the original itself?

i wonder if you could brighten up the right end and hint out the texture of that cloth..?

ryoung In reply to ArunaRao [2009-06-23 10:34:07 +0000 UTC]

I replaced the photo of the painting with a low resolution image from the scan.

This is now a more accurate reproduction of the original, though unfortunately the resolution is too low to see more detail. Unfortunately, I haven't time to edit the images as I have work to do!

Thx for viewing and commenting though...

your best one yet. Do you just use neutral colors in your paintings, or do you try to make them all monochromatic?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ryoung In reply to Athenap [2008-04-12 08:25:49 +0000 UTC]

Thanks Athena. I try to over emphasise the light and shadow with fairly neutral colours that don't conflict...

I think its great that there is always such lighting in your paintings. I personally love them very much myself - people with dramatic lighting.

Not sure how I feel about the background.

I really dig the shadows on this, there is a dramatic intensity to the the light. Very purposeful.

Great use of light and shadow. I wonder, do you initially draw in the features that end up hidden in shadow, like her other eye?

ryoung In reply to dashinvaine [2008-04-06 09:16:16 +0000 UTC]

Thanks Gordon. Ineither draw in nor paint totally shaded features, though I try to subtley distinguish major outlines most of the time.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ryoung In reply to NajborGraphics [2008-04-06 09:28:49 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. I absolutely adore light, and of course shadow. It's my prime medium. The oil, pastel and watercolours are totally secondary. I hope it's my distinguishing feature, to some extent... If I quote what I say on my personal website home page it may explain a little:

"My ballerinas and flamenco / belly / tango dancers are passionate, moody and emotional. My preferred lighting, shading and contrast are dramatic. I simply adore light and am fascinated with its arguably undue influence on any subject. After all, without light, what is art? Unlike the vast majority of past and current artists, I delve extensively between the extremes of highlights and lowlights in my artwork in a chiaroscuro technique, occasionally minimalist, often leaving the viewer's mind to complete the picture and to add depth. I always strive to create an atmosphere in whatever I produce, at the highest possible quality and using a knife, brush, canvas and a very limited colour palette of oil paint or pastels, often alla prima, mixing only on the canvas!"
