Hardsuit (Anno Astra)

In the middle of the 3rd century AA, personal body armour is an essential for survival on the battlefield. While MS pilots, vehicle and ship crews usually settle for lighter, flexible 'softsuit' armours, infantry, in whatever environment hostile or benevolent, prefer the 'hardsuit.' A catchall term for body armour of rigid construction, hardsuits have superior defensive properties, the best being constructed of a mix of cermet composites, 'intelligent' polyamides, superconductive mesh and other advanced materials. Such armours are worn either piecemeal or whole, depending on the environment. Space combat, for example, would call for full gear with zero-G maneuvering kit and pressure seals. A full harness typically weighs from 20 to 25 kg.

While most hardsuits are similar in form and function, cosmetic details vary a great deal, often reflecting regional and national sentiments. Dai Nippon combat helmets, for example, resemble the traditional kabuto, with prominent shikoro and stylized visors in the manner of a menpo. Their rigid cuirasses, with horizontal indentations, are made to resemble the yokohagi do style of tosei gusoku.
