It's a Southern Hognose, Heterodon simus, and yeah, they're pretty rare. I've never seen one in the wild myself, and they're supposed to be native to where I live.

I live in South Carolina. I've seen, and caught, Eastern Hognoses(Heterodon platyrhinos), which are much larger and more-varied in pattern, and which have an impressive cobra-like "hood" that they spread in bluff, but the only Southern Hoggies I've seen were captive-bred specimens. Even the Easterns have all but disappeared from the area where I live, though, due to a lack of toads, their only food source. It's been over 10 years since I found one.

awwww thats to bad we went on a field trip for my enviro sci class and we found two of them and he was like in the 20 years i have been doing this i have been wanting to see one and this is the first time..... so that just shows how rare it is to see them and it was a good thing i had my camera with me... it was very fun
