In Fact, I'm Glad This Subject Was Brought Up Because It Just So Happens, That I Have Not Seen Very Many Lightning Bugs This Year Or The Year Before That, I Know That Most People Blame It On The Pesticides, But That Could Only Be Half The Problem. We Have Been Using Pesticides For Years, And We Did Not Notice Any Insect Declines Back Then, We Also Had Some Pretty Horrible Droughts In The Past Few Years, And Ever Sense Then, We Have Noticed Insect Declines. Sure, Pesticides May Play A Role In Some Of The Insect Declines, But There's A Possibility That Droughts Might Play A Huge Role, Considering Most Insects Don't Like Very Dry Conditions!

I Sure Hope Nothing Is Wrong With The Insects, And I Hope We Will Solve This Problem Soon Enough!

It is very worrying, I do hope it was just a one off but bearing in mind that this was taken in late September and it was already getting quite cold, I think not

Thank you

Yep,lets hope its just a glitch, there were plenty of Aphids about,so food wasnt an issue, maybe the Harlequins have really made an impact this year, though I didnt even see those either..

Such a beautiful, crisp, clear and bright image... HOW??? How can I achieve these kind of shots?

s-kmp In reply to The-WrinklyNinja [2013-10-02 05:30:25 +0000 UTC]

Thank you, this is the first shot of a ladybird that I have felt was good enough to post.

In fact this was also the first one I've seen all year!

Last year I tried on several occasions but each time all I got were out of focus blurry shots

I've not seen anywhere near as many this year either.

I had a captive Daddy Longlegs (in a web) outside my window the other day, but trying to get a crisp shot through double glazing doesn't really work. (It escaped, by the way.)

It's quite worrying really

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

The-WrinklyNinja In reply to s-kmp [2013-10-05 13:54:39 +0000 UTC]

Many birds and regular insects are getting scarce around here. There are still the moths which get into the communal hallway, but the numbers that used to fly around the streetlamp outside my window are now drastically reduced. It was nothing to see bats flying around taking bugs, etc, but very rarely see a bat any more.

Hedgehogs and foxes the same. Occasionally see/hear a fox late night, but no hedgehogs for years.

Like I said it is very much a great concern. I wonder just when will people wake up to the mess we are creating

The-WrinklyNinja In reply to s-kmp [2013-10-05 22:48:55 +0000 UTC]

That usually happens when it's far too late. Still... We'll be able to pollute Mars to extinction soon, too. (The planet we possibly started out from.)

Absolutely, there were hardly any insects early on but not one Ladybird at all
