Story
———
Iris slowly walked down the aisle of the show barn, walking past all the pretty horses who were closed away in their stalls. She was busy putting her silver hair into a bun, twisting it tightly before tying it off with a hair tie. She took her black hat out from under her armpit and adjusted it to fit her head. She sighed, letting her shoulders relax a little as she made her way towards Karma’s stall. Iris had come to this qualifying show all alone, without the assistance of Audra or any of the others back at the barn. Their last show had not gone well, placing third overall in their cutting class. However, Audra convinced her to give it another shot, her and Karma. They had been training for months and even entered a few small, local shows together. But Iris was still nervous. She still wasn’t too trusting about getting into the saddle. It had been three years, but it still felt like yesterday. Iris let out a long sigh again, turning towards Karma’s door. Her stall was latched, nice and secure. The chestnut mare cast her a glance, huffing and turning back towards her hay. Iris smiled, unhooking the large door and entering the large stall they had been giving.
She slowly went through their routine, making sure to brush out every single tangle in Karma’s mane and mud spot out of her coat, making sure she looked beautiful and presentable. Karma stood well as always, putting up with Iris’ fussing whenever she encountered a problem, like the saddle pad being too far or her leg wraps being too high up. Soon enough however, they were ready. The pair sported their common blue/teal look, with matching colors and black gear. Karma was as shiny as ever, her coat glistening in the barn lights. Iris slipped the mare a cookie before pulling the bridle over her ears, giving her a final pat on the neck and leading her out of the stall. Iris quickly swung up onto the short mare, taking the reins in her hand and clicking her onwards down towards the arena.
She could hear the announcers over the loudspeaker, calling out names and numbers and scores every few minutes. All Iris could hear however was her own thoughts and her heart beating like a drum. She rubbed Karma on the neck to comfort her thoughts. Everything was going to be fine. She trusted this mare with her life. It would be okay.
