Iris had been nervous to say the least. This was the first time in 5 years she was competing again, let alone on her mare. Of course, Audra had no doubts her partner would mess up. She had seen the two training back home. One of the best she’d seen. But Iris wasn’t so sure. Yes, she’d been doing this her whole life. But something about this felt different to her.

Karma stomped her hoof impatiently as Iris tacked the mare up. The woman gave the mare a reassuring pat as she tightened the girth.

“So impatient!” Audra chuckled, stroking the mare’s face, giving her a few treats every so often.

“She always is.” Iris sighed, turning to grab Karma’s bridle.

“She’s just ready to cut some calves,” Audra smiled, quickly turning into a frown as she glanced at Iris. “Come onnn, loosen up! What did I say, you’ll be fine. You’re pros!”

“Yeah, yeah. Whatever you say Aud.” Iris waved her free hand. She unclipped Karma’s halter, tossing it over to the side.

“You need some more confidence, seriously.” Audra sighed, picking up the blue halter off the ground.

“I had confidence five years ago. Things have changed, Audra.” She replied snappily, placing the bit into Karma’s mouth and slipping the bridle over her ears. She took the reins and led the mare out of the wash stall, bringing her out into the alleyway of the barn, swinging up into the saddle.

Audra shook her head, walking alongside the two. “Ok, ok, sorry. I get it, it was a bad fall. But you’ve worked your way back up and now you’re even better than you were before! Trust me, I’ve seen you two work. You’ll be fine.”

Iris sighed lightly again, adjusting her hat as they walked out of the barn and down to the arenas. The sun was starting to set, and the lights from both the amusement park and the arenas lit up the beach.

“Ok, fine. I’ll take what you’re saying into consideration.” She rolled her eyes and Audra playfully nudged her leg.

“You’re so stubborn!” Audra exclaimed. “I think you just do it to make my life harder.” She accused.

Iris gasped offendedly. “Of course not! How dare you accuse me of such a thing!” The two giggled, teasing each other as they walked past other people.

As they approached the designated arena, they watched the other competitors in the other arenas. Some doing dressage, and some reining. Iris had always found it nice to watch other people do what they did best.

“You’ll be fine, I promise. I’ll be right by the fence rooting for you!” Audra smiled. Iris nodded and sighed once again, fiddling with her reins nervously. “Trust me, Karma will take good care of you.” She patted the mare, who huffed in response.

“I know she will, won’t you Karma?” Iris smiled.

“Ok, ok. Off you two go! Have fun!” Audra called as the two started to jog away.
