In the censored english version T.K. and Matt are half-brothers but thats not true!

They just say their half-brothers at the beginning, but it was really just a slip up on the translator's part. I can't really think of a short was to accurately describe Matt and T.K.'s predicament.
My question is, why do they have different last names? And if T.K.'s mother is French (as both her parents are) then why does she have a Japanese last name? (Takaishi = gem stone)

Hmmm....I don't really know very much about the english version (just f.e. this half-brother-thing)
But I guess this name-confusion is also just a mistake on the translation.
