Description
I’m sure most of you are familiar “Velma”, the internet’s latest punching bag…..and rightfully so.This series is the textbook definition of “our expectations for you were low…..but holy fuck!”
Everyone already kind of knew this show was a gonna be bad, but no one expected it to be THIS awful.
Just about everyone has gone into detail on why this show is terrible.
The barely-existent mystery, the pitiful teen drama, the overly mean-spirited humor, the over-reliance on meta humor, the overly cynical and legitimately kind of racist writing, the not-at-all genuine social commentary is often years to decades too late, and the underlying resentment towards the Scooby-Doo franchise (as well the medium of animation) as a whole.
The only saving grace is really the animation and the art-style. So although the show is shit, unlike most terrible adult animated shows, at least it isn’t an visual eye sore ala Big Mouth.
But besides that, the show is just painful to sit through and more than deserves its reputation as one of, if not the worst animated show of all time and one of the worst television shows in history.
I know some people would be argue that shows like The Nutshack are much worse, but I beg differ.
If you look at some of the behind the scenes for The Nutshack, you can tell that the people behind that show are probably cool people to hang with in real life and feel like a group of passionate people who legitimately wanted to make a really fun and humorous show.
Granted they failed miserably, but there was a genuine attempt.
Velma feels like it was created only for the sake of profit by a bunch of 40-somethings who have had generally privileged lives, are a little more than out of touch with the real world and current times, and have egos about the size of China.
I mean for God’s sake, Velma is literally a self insert of Mindy Kaling (the voice of the character and the series’ executive producer), who has a habit of inserting herself into the main cast of any show she’s in charge of.
Anyway, one of the most hated elements of the show are the characters.
Pushing aside the secondary cast, who are mostly forgettable, most of the main cast are absolutely insufferable.
Putting aside the fact that Scooby-Doo himself was excluded from this series (which although the reason for it was idiotic, I’m glad he was spared from this bullshit), the gang in this series are borderline unrecognizable from their previous iterations.
Starting off with the titular protagonist herself, Velma is undoubtedly the worst character in the entire series.
This Velma is a an absolute piece of shit. She’s rude and condescending to virtually everyone (most of the time having no good reason for being this way towards them), narcissistic to the nth degree, and legitimately kind of racist.
She’s also a borderline sociopath. Apart from the narcissism, she barely cares about anyone (beside her mother) else unless they’re able to be of benefit to her.
And for self-proclaimed brains and true founder of the Mystery Inc, she barely does a whole lot in this series. If anything, most of the mystery solving (what little there is) is usually done by the other characters. As for the brains part, this Velma doesn’t really come off as an intelligent individual. If anything, she’s kind of an idiot. I mean, one of the earliest episodes literally mentioned that she usually copies off Norville’s homework.
The next two members are little better, but not by much.
Daphne is a entire bundle of deep-rooted insecurities fueled by abandonment issues, manipulative tendencies, and a somewhat psychotic nature.
I mean during that stupid self-defense tournament, she literally repeatedly shanked a girl in the leg, prompting her to bleed and showed no remorse for it.
Norville, who besides being the most “in name only” member of the gang, is one of the few people in the show who is a somewhat decent human being.
However, he’s still not that good.
His main schtick is that he’s a simp for Velma (why anyone would find her attractive to begin with is beyond me) and an all-around beta male.
At the halfway point of the series, he enters a relationship with a girl named Gigi, who actually helps him become a better person.
Unfortunately, his simpage for Velma is way too strong and causes her to dump his dumbass.
Near the end of the series, after Velma nearly gets his dad (who ironically looks more like Shaggy than he does) arrested, Norville finally has enough of Velma and ends their barely existent friendship.
He even goes as far as to transfer to another school, in order to get away from her, thus making him the most relatable character in the show.
However, just like all simps, they don’t stay away from their lady for long, since he basically comes back to save Velma.
Finally, we come to Fred……
Just like the rest of the gang, he was also horribly bastardized.
Going from the kind-hearted, strategic, himbo leader of the gang, to a racist, idiotic douchebag.
But believe or not….Fred is legitimately the only likable member of the gang.
His likability mostly stems from his performance done by Glenn Howerton, who is one of the few actors in show who is actually giving it his all (along with being one of the few who is way too good for this shit).
In all honesty, Glenn should consider getting a secondary career as a voice actor, he clearly has the chops and range for it.
But besides that, he’s also surprisingly the most sympathetic character in the show. Especially more than the character we’re actually suppose to sympathize with, aka Velma.
When looking at his home-life, you can understand why Fred is the way he is.
His parents are not only pretty shitty people, but it’s pretty clear that they really don’t care about Fred and generally look down on him. Combine that with the fact that they clearly didn’t raise him well, it makes sense he ended up the way he is.
For God’s sake, the guy has the mentality of a child.
Along with that, it’s obvious that he’s being pressured by his parents (specifically his father) to be manly and all.
And while we don’t see Fred with really any peers of sorts, I think to safe that if does have any peers, they probably weren’t much of a good influence on him either.
I think it’s safe to say that Fred isn’t really a bad person, he’s just very misguided.
He’s honestly like Beavis in a way. Like Fred, it’s shown that Beavis is actually a genuinely good person, but unfortunately, he spends way too much time with bad influences….aka Butthead.
Honestly, Fred is way more justified in the way he is. More so when compared to say, Velma, who has really almost no reason to act like….ya know….a sociopathic bitch.
Also, you can’t help feel bad for him given how much he’s dunked on throughout the show. If his shitty home life wasn’t enough, there’s also the fact that show makes frequently fun of him for basically being mentally disabled in a way and a late bloomer.
Not only that, he’s really the only member of the gang who actually develops over the course of the season. It even ends with Fred leaving his father and going off on his own, possibly trying to gain his own independence.
Yeah…..the character who it seems was intended to be hated ended up being the best character in the entire show.
Well that’s all for now…..I’m gonna go nap….peace.
