FF's staff gave her name "Sidney". AMERICANS renamed her, because that's what they do. Always. Americans can't be counted as FF's staff. Also a bit info from Wikia "She is the granddaughter of Cid Sophiar , who owns the Hammerhead service station. Cid is a recurring name in the Final Fantasyseries for an older man who often has an engineering background or something to do with airships . Cindy's Japanese name is "Cidney", reflecting the connection.". Now what connection can be reflecting by renaming the characters?

I don't think there is. There was none before when they've renamed characters in other games and anime. Like "Sailor Moon", "Pokemon" and "Gyakuten Saiban". It's just americans translators are all racists.
