Description
The person who commissioned Mario's model from Super Mario Odyssey wanted to know what the process is for me to convert models to .pmx models for use in MikuMikuDance. A few people have asked me this before, so I decided to make this PDF to try and illustrate the process. Hopefully I did a decent job showing how it works. This demo shows how I convert a rigged .smd model into a functional .pmx model, including renaming the bones, setting up the A-pose, adding morphs, etc. It isn't really meant to show exactly how I do it (as that would require multiple tutorials to explain well) nor is it meant to be a complete tutorial on the process, but it should give you a general idea of how much work goes into these models.
Also, please note that this only explains one of several methods I use to convert models and it really depends on the source model. Mario is an example of an ideal complex model for me to work on (besides certain super-easy-to-work-on models like N64 models) because he is already rigged, has his textures applied without error, has bones for his face, and doesn't require any big edits.
Also, I forgot to show how I then convert the finish model into other formats like .xps, but that should be self-explanatory.
If you'd like to download the model made in the demo, see here:

This tutorial is a great help! Before I'd thought that you can't really do much in Transformation View, but you showed me otherwise (it helps me with some of the models I'm currently working on)! Also, did you teach most of that yourself, actually?

I'm glad it helps out!
I'm mostly self-taught when it comes to MMD. I mostly learned this stuff from messing around with the program with the mindset of "Ooh, what does this button do?"

Ah, that explains a few things; I haven't spent so much time on the whole modelling thing before the commission because I was keen to improve my drawing skills. ...Anyways, how did you fix that seam on Mario's nose in the end? Also, have you ever tried to port models to .pmx format using the latest version of Blender (2.79b)too?

SAB64 In reply to Maripolifan [2018-08-30 21:52:08 +0000 UTC]
That issue with his nose is caused by a slight UV error that occurs when I port models to MMD. I use the Object Manipulation window's UV tab to adjust the textures of vertices I have selected. You can find this window through the PmxView window by pressing F4.
The most recent version of Blender I have is 2.7, but the plugins would likely work on any version of 2.70 or up until 2.80. I just stick with 2.7 since I know that will work without issue with the plugins I have.

Oh... When I ported the model to MMD I didn't know what the source of the problem was, nor how to fix it in PMX Editor, so I retouched it in another program lol... Primitive but still better than just leaving it, I guess
Btw, have you ever used Blender for actually rendering pictures?

I've tried to use Blender for rendering before, but my laptop always has trouble running it in rendering mode. It's not a very strong computer at all.

Hard to imagine that you have a weak computer, honestly. What computer do you have?
I'm hoping to get a MSI soon...

I just have a standard work laptop from ASUS. I'm not sure of the specs, but I can't run any games newer than old PS2-era games.

So you're not part of the PC gaming master race, eh? ...My laptop from Dell isn't any better, it's already close to crashing when I have PMX Editor, MMD (without any models loaded) and Firefox opened at the same time lol

"PC gaming master race"
Your laptop actually sounds a bit worse! I can run all of those at once (with models loaded), it just lags a bit.

Yeah, and it's gotten worse over the years and idk why. I can't put my laptop to idle state because it'd crash as soon as I want to turn it on again.

It's definitely time to get a new one. I've had laptops that did that before. Usually, the problem was that the fans that keep it cool quit working, so the laptop would overheat if I did anything with it.

Sorry I don't remember the name of fbx to mmd converter I don't use it from awhile actually I had a clear hd Odyssey model for mmd expect for some lacking of texturing that I don't know how to fix it

SAB64 In reply to supermariojumpan [2018-08-22 03:44:41 +0000 UTC]
That's okay! It's probably better I stick with my current methods, anyways.
Is the Odyssey model missing textures outright, or are they applied wrong?

supermariojumpan In reply to SAB64 [2018-08-22 17:30:29 +0000 UTC]
They're wrong applied like the non hd mustache are on my model but If I only could get it work it would surely be the best mmd odyssey model around

I bet that problem with the HD hair details is likely something that can't be replicated in MMD. The hair is rendered by the game engine like how DK's fur in Tropical Freeze works, but the only thing I've seen in MMD that gets close is a fur rendering effect.
