Description
In Chad, Central Africa, the Djurab desert is home to a plethora of late Miocene fossils. Among these were not just one, but four sabertooth cats of different lineages in the machairodontinae: Megantereon (upper left on the branch), Lokotunjailurus (upper right, sitting), Tchadailurus (lower left), and Amphimachairodus (Center). In addition to these, four other other cats, crocodiles, primitive three-toed horses, fish, monkeys, hippos, aardvarks, turtles, rodents, giraffes, snakes, antelopes, pigs, mongooses, foxes, hyenas, otters, honey badgers and the hominid Sahelanthropus dwelled in the Djurab, providing ample food for these sabertooth cats, indicating that there was enough biodiversity that all these predators could coexist. Based on these and other fossils, it is theorized that the Djurab was once the shore of a lake, generally forested close to the waters with savannah-like areas some distance away.A present I made for my mom for Mother's Day. This is also perhaps on of the few drawings in which Tchadailurus has thus far been reconstructed.

It's amazing how you can see the modern Big cats in the Prehisotoric guys. I can see:
Upper right - Lynx and Leopard
Sitting - Cheetah
Tchadailurus - Lynx
Amphimachairodus - Lion
Do you have any or Mauric Anton's books? I love his books.

i have the exact same books. He has another book I think, Sabertooth's and hominids. Unfortunately it's too expensive.

Fantastic job on this piece! Sabertooths are the best, Mauricio Anton would be very proud. There's little information regarding the exact species of prey and other animals these sabertooths coexisted with, is there a complete fauna list anywhere with the genus of the miocene Djurab fauna?

You'd have to ask Mauricio yourself. He knows more of it than I do.

No you would not. It has been confirmed to isotope ration analysis that Megantereon at least was a man-eater; it preyed on Australopithecus at Swartkrans and at Dmanisi in Georgia, it violently interacted with Homo erectus, as evidenced by a punctured skull from said hominid. Besides, all four sabertooth cats in the Djurab ranged in size from 80-800 pounds! Where would you keep one? What would you feed one other than yourself? How would you clean its enclosure? Think about that...

Well I was an intern at a zoo for a summer and part of that included reconstruction of a polar bear enclosure. I volunteer a lot less of my time than i should at a exotic animal rescue farm and have worked with cassowaries, rams, small alligators and others. Though i have never handled the wolves i have shoveled plenty of their shit. With an offal lot of help i could handle them, before becoming dinner.

It certainly is. I've never seen so many sabertooths in one environment. Not in Cerro de los Batallones, not in Rancho La Brea, not even in Coffee Ranch, Texas.

It was only described earlier this year. I wrote the Wikipedia page for it using the paper describing it.
