Description
Seen in the Milstein Family Hall of Ocean Life, at the American Museum of Natural History. Here are two young tiger sharks chasing after a loggerhead turtle. While the turtle's shell provides some protection from shark jaws, unlike some other turtle species, the loggerhead cannot retract its head or limbs. Tiger sharks (named for their stripes), on the other hand, have teeth that well suited for slicing through hard-surfaced prey, including crustaceans and turtles (other prey includes fish, seals, birds, dolphins, squid, sea snakes, and even other small sharks). While they eat a variety of prey, tiger sharks have a reputation as 'Garbage Eaters,' due to them eating a variety of inedible, man-made objects that just linger inside their stomachs.Related content
