Description Seen in Vertebrate Origins, at the American Museum of Natural History. Its name meaning 'Mastodon Lizard,' this temnospondyl belonged to the group of capitosaurs (advanced, mostly Triassic animals). There was a pair of large triangular tusks that pointed up from near the tip of the animal's lower jaw and could've been used to take hold of its prey (which were fish and other, and smaller, animals). Having lived in lakes, ponds, and swamps, it probably hunted like a crocodilian.
