Description Just something to celebrate National Butterfly & Hummingbird Day, the day when we celebrate, appreciate, honor, learn about, and spread awareness of the two tiny, but beautiful, flying flower-loving critters we know and love (and even view them in person). There are about 17,500 species of butterflies and over 300 species of hummingbirds around the world. The reason we celebrate these creatures because they play their very important part in the ecosystem as pollinators, helping plants reproduce by spreading pollen from plant to plant as they suck nectar from the plants. Despite that there are other kinds of pollinators like bees and bats, there are some plants that only depend on the butterflies and hummingbirds as their pollinators. Three ways you can attract  and keep butterflies and hummingbirds to your yard is plant flowers and other nectar-filled and colorful plants (especially milkweed, sunflowers, Russian sage, and bee balm), set up feeders with a mix of one cup of sugar and four cups of water inside, and be sure to leave the Autumn leaves on the ground so butterflies can use them as a nursery. Happy National Butterfly & Hummingbird Day!
