Description Just something for a day when we celebrate and show our total appreciation for a breed that's (in most cases) completely without fur. Today, Peruvian Hairless Dogs (regardless of their appearance as a breed) everywhere get their day of recognition. So, any of you have Peruvian Hairless Dogs or would want a Peruvian Hairless Dog of your own? Well if so, sounds great, but here are some very important facts (and tips) about Peruvian Hairless Dogs that you should know about:

1. Peruvian Hairless Dogs originated from, and are native to, Peru of South America.
2. Peruvian Hairless Dogs are officially recognized as part of Peru's cultural heritage.
3. Even though they're typically (and mostly) kept as pets, Peruvian Hairless Dogs, in many parts of Peru, are used as living hot-water bottles for warmth at night, or pain management, since their bald bodies radiate heat.
4. Peruvian Hairless Dogs are given other names: naked dog, Peruvian viringo, Chimú dog, Perro Sin Pelo de Perú, Inca Hairless Dog, and Peruvian Inca Orchid.
5. Peruvian Hairless Dogs are intelligent, affectionate with family, and very protective of women and children in the family. However, they are wary of strangers.
6. Peruvian Hairless Dogs are generally lively, alert and friendly with other dogs, yet don't like to be alone, but can do well when they are trained.
7. Peruvian Hairless Dogs are agile and fast, with many of them enjoying sight-hunting small rodents. They also learn fast and are very smart, but they tend to get bored easily with repetitious games like "fetch".
8. Peruvian Hairless Dogs do not tolerate extreme temperatures, but they are quite comfortable wearing clothing and will even play in the snow if dressed warmly.
9. Peruvian Hairless Dogs generally require an owner that understands dog language and are not recommended for beginners.
10. Peruvian Hairless Dogs earned their reputation for being easy to wash and for a natural lack of fleas from their lack of fur. They also don't cause typical allergic reactions to dog-sensitive humans because they lack the normal dog dander. Nevertheless, however, these dogs should be washed from time to time to remove dirt and prevent clogging of pores.
11. Peruvian Hairless Dogs, as a result of their lack of hair/fur, tend to have fewer teeth than other breeds, mostly lacking molars and premolars, and a trait of  dominant double lethal mutation (in other words, homozygotic hairlessness does not exist).
12. Peruvian Hairless Dogs live an average life span up to between 11 and 12 years.

If you're considering getting a Peruvian Hairless Dog (or any dog for that matter), make sure you do your research so you'll know what to expect and deal with and to look for one in a shelter, where there's a lot of dogs in need of a good home (not in a pet store, where puppies there would mostly have had come from puppy mills). And remember, never judge a breed by its appearance. With all that said, Happy Peruvian Hairless Dog Day (from this hairless, but (nevertheless) sweet Peruvian Hairless Dog family here).
