Description Just something for a day when we come to appreciate and celebrate certain type of herding dogs we all know and love. Today, collies everywhere get their day of recognition. So, any of you have collies or would want a collie of your own? Well if so, sounds great, but here are some very important facts (and tips) about collies that you should know about:

1. Collies originated from Scotland and Northern England.
2. Collies are medium-sized, fairly lightly-built dogs, with pointed snouts, and many of them have a distinctive white color over the shoulders.
3. Collies were bred mostly to herd livestock (like cattle and sheep) and, therefore, have the strong herding instinct.
4. Collies are agile, very active, very trainable, and highly intelligent.
5. Four breeds have the word, Collie, in their names and those are the rough collie, the smooth collie, the border collie, and the bearded collie.
6. While some remained herders for livestock, other breeds are used for dog shows and/or dog sports.
7. The word, Collie, may have came from the related word coolly, which refers to the black-faced mountain sheep of Scotland, and that collies were bred as sheepdogs.
8. Collies may have a genetic disease called canine cyclic neutropenia, or grey collie syndrome, which is a stem cell disorder.
9. Some collie breeds, with their double-layered coats, need to be brushed frequently and thoroughly to keep it in a show condition.
10. Even though they are usually sociable and show little to no aggression, collies need to be socialized often in order to avoid shyness. They are also usually loyal to one family.
11. Some collie breeds are known for their sensitivity and awareness of emotions in people.
12. Some collie breeds have long hair and double coats, while others have short hair.

If you're considering getting a collie (or any dog for that matter), make sure you do your research so you'll know what to expect and deal with and to look for one in a shelter, where there's a lot of dogs in need of a good home (not in a pet store, where puppies there would mostly have had come from puppy mills). With all that said, Happy World Collie Day (from this collie pack here).
