Description
Just something for a day when we celebrate and show our total appreciation for Japan's pretty, but bold dog breed. Today, Shiba Inus everywhere get their day of recognition. So, any of you have Shiba Inus or would want a Shiba Inu of your own? Well if so, sounds great, but here are some very important facts (and tips) about Shiba Inus that you should know about:1. Shiba Inus are the smallest of the six original dog breeds native to Japan.
2. Shiba Inus are called brushwood dogs.
3. Shiba Inus originated from the mountainous areas of the Chūbu region of Japan.
4. Although they're not popular outside Japan, Shiba Inus have become popular on the Internet, especially in memes.
5. According to a study in Japan, Shiba Inus have the second highest rate of patella luxation, with 35% of them surveyed being affected.
6. Shiba Inus need a lot of exercise and stimulation, otherwise they can get anxious, which leads to undesirable behaviors, one of them being notably the 'shiba scream'.
7. Throughout history, Shiba Inus were bred and used to hunt and flush small game, such as birds and rabbits.
8. Shiba Inus are generally said to be alert, affectionate, independent, and highly intelligent, but also tend to be somewhat stubborn and strong-willed.
9. Shiba Inus are known for their high aggression, high reactivity and medium trainability.
10. One possible explanation for observed behavior of Shiba Inus is that they are more closely related to the wolf than domesticated dogs from other countries.
11. Since Shiba Inus are small, alert, and agile, they cope very well with mountainous terrain and hiking trails.
12. Shiba Inus have a lifespan of up to fifteen and a half years (which is greater than any other breed of dog).
If you're considering getting an Shiba Inu (or any dog for that matter), make sure you do your research so you'll know what to expect and deal with and to look for one in a shelter, where there's a lot of dogs in need of a good home (not in a pet store, where puppies there would mostly have had come from puppy mills). With all that said, Happy Shiba Inu Day (from this sweet-looking, yet mighty Shiba Inu family here).
