Description
Beyond the FenceBased on a True Story, from the heart of a horse.
I stood here from day to day, night to night, storm through storm, staring at that cold wire, staring at the piece of my mane caught around it, blowing in the wind; cold heartless wind. I hear a noise and look. Another one of “them”. How dare you tease me! How dare you pretend to care! How dare you notice than the next look away. I turn away in disgust. Never will I trust a two legged again ( but I’d be lying if I said my heart was starving for love).
Another lonely day goes by, and another, and another. I grow old, tired and weak. With nothing but weeds to eat and tainted water to drink. I stand staring at that wire again, same piece of mane caught around it. I ask myself “What would life be like beyond the fence?”.
I wake today to a new smell. What is that? I wander my prison wasteland and near the cold wire I find food I hadn’t tasted in so long. I eat it slowly taking in all its wonderful memories, back to the days when someone did care! When someone did love me! But I also smelled something new. It made me feel warm inside. I wanted to find that smell! I want to smell it again! I want to find what made this wonderful warming scent!
I wake again to the same food as the day before and to that warming scent but this time I see something. Great, it’s another one of them! A brisk wind blew across the vast space between me and the two legged but it was warm and…could it be? No… Yes? Impossible! But it is! The scent! I looked at the two legged. “It’s you…” I stood silent as a horse. “Your smell is all over this food, but why? What makes you turn to my need young human?”. I slowly start walking toward her. Wait! Stop! What are you doing!? But I couldn’t stop. I just had to know! She came up to the wire and put her hand forward. “What is this?” I snorted. “You think I’ll let you touch me?” But before I could even think to turn back, I was the closest to a human than I ever had been in years.
We both looked into each other eyes. I don’t know what she saw in me but I saw kindness in her. She whispered softy to me. Such gentle words you say. A horse has always been a man’s friend but also mans slave, but to her, I was the most beautiful creature she had ever seen and in her eyes I found love again. She softy strokes my nose with her small hand. “So this is what life can be, beyond this fence.”
I’ll be honest with you, I never did get beyond that wire fence, at least not in flesh, but I did in spirit, which now resides in that kind girl, and the love she shared with me now belongs to a fellow equine who too felt the pain of neglect and I am glad that her heart is now with him. She was looking for a reason to live, I was looking for a reason to live, and we did find that reason. Hers in the joy of horses and mine in the heart of the one human who ever saw me as an angel and a saint. So please heed my story, for it is true. You don’t have the right to earn our trust. It’s a privilege and we are the final judges.
One does not need to teach a horse, for he already knows. Listen to your horse, for he has a lot to tell you and in all good time, you will learn his lessons and then you will have earned his heart.
In Memory of Bakura. A Neglected Pinto whose legacy will forever live on in my heart.

Ah thank you! Im glad you enjoyed it! I have no idea what happened to Bakura, but I drove by and saw a section of wire fence pushed down so I assumed he has past on (he was very old). I just hope I was able to bring him at least some happiness and made him feel loved again
