Description
So very random.Have some cat hair in your tutorial too. XD
I forgot to say, but warm water is best. The hotter is is, the best to get the tea & coffee to mark the paper better. But not too hot, or you can't put your hands in to mess around. XD;
You can also use the tea bag without tearing it, but you can do more stuff with the leaves out of it. Try both and see what you like.
You can try other things than coffee and tea, of course, but those are really fun to play with and get quick results.
Once you've scanned, you can edit your texture, remove parts you dislike, change color and all sorts of things.
I didn't much cover the "how to use it in the art" part because that depends a lot on each person, (and this tutorial is about how to make the textures and not the use in the artwork itself), but putting a layer with texture over your drawing and playing with the effects (multiply, overlay, etc.) + lowering the texture layer opacity until it suits what you want tends to be an easy way to add a texture quickly.
Results with be different with each pic, so go ctrl+u and play also with the color of your texture to suit your pic better.
(Advice that works on SAI and Photoshop under PC, if you're using something else, uhm, do what you normally do to change color etc. XD; *lol* *isn't sure how to then* XD; )
The coffee etc. is great for giving stuff an "old paper" look too.

Uhhm, it depends on the heat of the water too. I used black tea and darjeeling, but you can play with how dark it is after you scan.
What matters most is whether you want hardcore contrasting areas (very dark stains in some areas) or an overall similar hue and just smaller splotches all over.
With the paper all over wet but not quite submerged, you can grab bunches of leaves and crush/smudge/rub them on the paper, or you can pour very hot water over the whole thing and leave it there submerged with clumps of leave in different areas.
It's the same for coffee ground chunks, though the final stains will be different.
As for time, under 15 minutes should be enough. Don't use cold water, warm works better. ^^/
I'm noticing so many things I should have mentioned in the tutorial itself. 8D;;;;; ORZ
But yeah, it will be a huge difference whether you just leave things on the spot and let the water do it's job for a more overall similar look all over, or whether you take clumps of leaves in your hand and crush/rub against the paper for particular effects. You can also spread the coffee chunks and press/scrape lightly (not so hard that it would tear the paper) them around with your hand, then leave it in different places to soak. (Just don't burn yourself if you're using hot water and putting your hand in. XD; )
Once you scan, you can copy the scan layer and set the texture copy to multiply. It will become darker. If your initial texture is too light, repeating that a few times can give you something much stronger.
Similarly, you can play with the color of it, because that will affect a lot the pic where you use it on. ^^/ Darker or lighter will change a lot too.

lol I'd LOVE to try that out!
I just hope I don't make a big mess out of it *v*

The mess stays contained inside the cookie sheet or cake pan, that's the beauty of it~! X3
Then it's easy to just pour out the stuff afterwards and put the pan in the dishwasher!

Thank you so much, Sagakure!
I've actually tried to get some cool textures in paper and then scanning, but your "tea tip" is great!!

Another thing that's fun to do is crush a paper, then flatten it again a bit and scan it.
The high & low areas will create shadows and make interesting effects when you scan.
Crushing it more or less, flattening more or less, it will all change the amount of shadows and the final effect.

*Nela bows* you're great... you're rally great
Now, with all this tips, is when I start to mess up arroud and my floormates complain about me and my disasters LOL
I've tried to scan a piece of denim fabric and I get a weird thing. Maybe paper experiments keeps being a better idea after all.

Fabric is nice too, but the way the fiber goes makes it sort of repetitive in some cases. It's interesting, but I find paper more fun to play with because you're much more free to do random stuff.
And it's cheaper if you mess up. XD

You're welcome~! XD XD *hopes you have fun*
I think the cat hair stage of it happens while it's hanging to dry. XD It's all vulnerable to anything flying by, since it will attach to it while it's wet. XD
At least, it's not while it was in the kitchen that it happened. XD *lol*
(It might also be cat hair on the scanner, inevitable... XD XD; )

You can also mix-match techniques. Make a texture in a page, then airbrush/spray/etc. over some lace thingies around the borders for a shojo feel, and/or draw a sketch in pencil beforehand and then partially shade it with the coffe as you make the textures, and so on.
(It doesn't has to be always submerged, you can wet the paper and play with the coffee/tea/etc on it as you please, using it to paint as well.
)
It's a mess, but so much fun. XD XD *lol* It's best to have a nice large cookie sheet or cake pan and a peaceful corner of kitchen counter to play on. X3 X3

I'll try my best *-*!!! It seems very funny to do!! I have already ried a bit playing with coffee, so I think I might manage to make textures without having too much troubles.
Besides, thank you for all those tips! I hadn't thought of using the airbrush and all! Speaking of which, I haven't used it so much, but I was thinking of doing very soon since I am on vacations and should be ale to use it on my room now that i can open the window ^o^!!!
I have sometimes seen some eautiful watercolour textures, so I'll also try it! Though, the main problem might be the paper, I always feel bad when thinking of using some watercolor paper only to make a exture x-x. What kind of paper do you use exactly?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Sagakure In reply to Pastel-Cloud [2009-06-26 21:23:19 +0000 UTC]
I use all sorts of papers, but since it's something you'll scan and keep and all, it's not a waste to use some nice thick watercolor paper too.
I like sketch papers that have some texture to them as well, because the way the tea or coffee will settle in the grain of the paper makes interesting results.
Different papers will give different results, so get several sheets of different stuff and play around to try it out~ That way you only make the mess once but get several papers out of it. XD
Yay for nice and airy room.... I still remember once when I was much younger, going to airbrush in the woods (! XD) once because my mom was having reactions to the smell of the paint. 8D;
(Allergies are hardcore. XD; *went as far as possible, set the paper down on a chunk of wood, and airbrushed there* XD:;
Back when I used to do all traditional art instead of digital.

Taking photos of it is interesting too. ^^/
It's less detailed, but it can produce nice effects still.
In fact, you can use many photos as textures as well. (When I see a tree with interesting bark, I run to snap a photo of it. 8D; )
