Description This is 'SΓofra' the pooka, a character from my current story, mixing and matching outfits, so to speak. Trivia for those that are reading it: I had considered 'Hiberneigha' as a name for her world, before coming to the conclusion that, in match to her kind's character, a name was decidedly out of the picture.

Likes: Blackberries and decorative glass.
Dislikes: Cold iron. Hot iron as well. ...Iron in general, really.

I love the lighting effects on Siofra's hair from her eye-glow, and the choice of purple and blue for the front- and back-lighting really play up the ethereal, mystical quality of this piece (as opposed to the usual orange/blue combo for firelight) and give some great definition to what is otherwise a very dark piece. The background trees are also really cool -- I love how the jagged, bare branches add a hint of threat, or maybe just unease, to the scene.

Unfortunately, Siofra seems to have misplaced her tail, and the farther you go from her face, the more... well... sketchy the image gets. Maybe that's deliberate, but the foreground leaves look transparent and flat, like they were painted with a sponge. It's sort of a shocking contrast with the depth and detail of the character, especially with the two branches hovering just behind her.

Her pegasus wing also bothers me a bit simply because it's not simplified enough to look like a pony wing but not realistic enough to look like a real wing. I admit, I'm kind of a stickler for wings, but the edge lighting really draws the eye to the feathers, and the feathers are uneven in length, bend all over the place, and don't follow the shape and structure of a real bird wing. You might look up some resources on drawing bird wings if you want to go this route again.

I notice some moving wisps in the distant background. I kind of wish you'd brought a couple of those up front, to add some motion and energy to an otherwise fairly static scene.

Still, those are all some fairly minor gripes. The background is, well, background, and it's hard to look away from those eyes for long.

Yes... look deep into her eyes...

The tail itself was a deliberate omission, something I mused over before deciding I didn't want her to be too pony.Β

Although this will mean little to those who do not know the back story of this character, and will see her as some sort of bat/bird alicorn hybrid, an important facet of her character is that she is as much a pony, as she is, say, a kite, or a wolf.

Just like she isn't a pony, as much as she isn't a kite, or a wolf. Β It's an idea to wrap one's head around, I will admit.

I see. I admit I didn't notice she didn't have a tail until about the third look.

My first impressions is this piece grabs the viewer incredibly right from the get go. there is beautiful coloration, mixing of the blues and purples which contrast nicely with the gold orb of the eye and mild whites in the background. the colors seem to have been considered nicely here, with great fluidity, merging nicely but not disappearing or overlapping each other in an obnoxious form.
the central figure holds great prominance with the background being a nice compliment mixing a feeling of both fantasy romance and fear at once. it truly grabs you.
as for work, something in the background with the furthest trees feels perhaps as if it is not sharp enough, being somewhat rushed in its feel. i'd prefer a more concrete approach to them which either has them proplerly fading or showing in the image. that aside, overall the image is beautifully worked. e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="391" title=" (Smile)"/>

Well, maybe you can still use "Hiberneigha" as Luna's name for the place. :3

Mmm, I'd considered that, but I also wondered how it would fit etymologically outside of being a silly pun on the part of the author, that only a select few would get.

Well, doesn't have to be Luna's invention. I'm sure the whole area has local legends, tales, and common knowledge about who lives on the other side of the fairy rings and why you shouldn't disturb the mushrooms that grow there.

But anyway.

Do you happen to have another image of this character?
I'd like to see her at a different angle before I critique this. (If you have one that shows the Siofra from the front with her wings out, that would be awesome. If not, I guess I'll survive lol)
And I am well aware of the fact that someone else already made a critique, but I want to go into more detail with some things such as the tree-tops and the character's wings.

This is the only image of her that I've created, and the only one of her that I'm aware of. Β I'd be interested to hear what you have to say, though.

Darn, that complicates things.
I'll get back to this later, when I have more time to type and think

It also complicates things that she's a shapeshifting fae. Any other picture of her would likely be of a black hawk or a wolf.

ooh, that's cool.
Well it may take awhile to get around to critiquing.. I have a list of stuff I plan to critique lol

Any reply from ISP?
