Hey, one question, how do you integrate the layers, or do you colorize them? I use Multiply in PTSHP, but I like to try new things also, don't get the same results

Thanks for sharing the process! Have you ever made or considered making a time lapse video of your art getting made? I'd love to see that!

I can't see any different in the last two.

How do you get the colors to show up so nicely over top the greyscale shading? Whenever I try to shade using that method, things always looks really muddy, and the values for the colors are all off if you just try to use a hue layer.
Just curious what layer styles/blending you use.
Very nicely done though! Love the hair.

She has mentioned this in other works and I tested it in Clip Studio Paint (though she uses Paint Tool Sai). She renders in grey, then makes an overlay layer above that she puts colour on. After she merges the 2 she then tweaks the colours using different editing functions (she hasn't given an example of which ones) and then paints over the top to get more variation and detail.

I tried using the grayscale image and the flat colours next to it to recreate the image that comes immediately after and I wound up with a very dull image, but when I try the technique from scratch myself it seems to work very well, so give it a try. I can't say how Photoshop handles it - as I understand Photoshop has pretty poor colour handling.

Hmm, yeah I'll have to experiment. Because like you said, just using overlay on top of grey makes a very muddy, dull painting.
Thanks though!

This is why personally I don't paint in grey values then overlay the colour. I just paint in colour from the start so I get the exact hues I want. All the variation is painted in from the start and I don't have to mess around with adjustment layers to make it work

I think it might be one (or multiples) layers with the base colors that have been put under or on top of the greyscale layer with a style certain style depending on where is the greyscale layer xD ....
Im sorry if you don't really understand oml my english so bad.
hope it could help you tho

I can pretty much understand all the differences in the steps except for the last two, what did you do different between those two?

Excellent work! I really love the colors. How did you pick them? And also, what did you do for the last two steps?

Saige199 In reply to damasn [2016-09-13 07:35:57 +0000 UTC]

Well, for the last two steps I just took the third last step and painted over it how I liked
As for coloring, if you look in my gallery there is a section dedicated to how I shade/color using greyscale. It's essentially the same method here, I just fiddle with the colors until I find something I like, merge it all and paint from there. Under the shading is my flat colors which is what the middle right image is.

I think she changed the background a little bit and probably played slightly with the contrast.
