I wanted some explanation why robo-pirates couldn't just destroy these masks before Rayman reaches them. they were just sitting there in the game (not sure)

I always guessed they couldn't reach the "heart" of the sanctuaries somehow. But it's weird indeed.

Well they were guarded by guardians so they probably couldn't get past them and 3 of the masks were in those magic pillar things that only Rayman could open. The only the mask they could've actually gotten would be the Iron Mountains one if you stick to how it happens in the original versions where a baby Globox found it in the mines and if the pirates didn't leave the babies unattended in the mines.

Sorry for the late reply, I have just now noticed this comment.
That is kind of funny a baby Globox got the last mask without fighting a guardian But I think that has got changed in Rayman Revolution, if I am not mistaken.

I am aware of that change. 
Revolution: Pirates wouldn't be able to get a single mask
Original: They might've had a chance of getting the 4th one if they weren't so stupid to leave the baby Globoxes unattended in the mines.
