"Optimists you leave to their own devices to have fun. It is negative types like you that I want to make them know fun."
Woah, that was a long wait between uploading this and the previous UnderGarden character. Sorry guys. I get distracted easily. So yeah, here's Mary Gowland, in charge of the amusement park with his ridiculous fashion sense. I think the amusement park is pretty interesting in that the faceless there actually do have some voice and can scare the shit out of everyone, role-holder or no, when need be.
It was fun to do such bright colours, his being the most obnoxious of all~! But my colour pencils were practically dying. I was putting a good number of them in the microwave repeatedly, since for whatever reason, these shrinking sticks of colour had broken lead on the inside. You can put them in the microwave for a second or two, and that will melt the wax binder enough to repair any breaks. Still, this didn't blend quite the way I wanted, so I don't feel as if the colouring itself here is as good as the previous two with Pierce and Boris. And once again, I was distracted. This was like, 95% done for weeks. Oh well.
As long as it looks obnoxiously fun, I suppose. (I mean really, that outfit!)
Gowland needs more love anyways. He's one of the few (somewhat) sane characters that isn't all gloomy (*coughJuliuscough*)

Gowland is such a nice guy! And funny too, it's just too bad that most fangirls dislike him for some reason. I like how you can see his kindness in his eyes, and happiness too. It's almost like he's about to play his beautiful *cough cough* music. I actually find his ridiculous clothes to be pretty cool. And too be honest, most role holders have pretty weird clothes. But that's good, i mean.. Who doesn't love the character designs? They are so complex too, but it must be hard on the illustrator in the games, with all that detail and stuff. ( And some details doesn't even make sense, like Elliot's wheat-scarf, and Boris and his necklace gun thingy. )

I agree. He really is a nice guy! I think the fangirls who hate him are mostly low tolerance towards non-bishie characters or something like that. Depressing, but oh well. I find it weird that no glasses + clean shaven + no braid = suddenly attractive Gowland. Especially the glasses. And here I thought I was hip, thinking glasses were accepted as attractive in anime. I really enjoy Gowland's outfit too. But the blue-black diamond pants on the park employee's uniforms kinda end it for me. That's just a little too much. That true that all the roleholders do have strange clothes, but Gowland still takes the cake in just pure brightness. You know, Nightmare kinda reminds me of a Vocaloid. And I'm sure that outfit could be transformed into a magical girl uniform pretty easily too. (He's even got special powers and stuff! It can work!)
Honestly, I wouldn't mind drawing so many strange details like that, but I'm a perfectionist who loves details. And it's kinda fun to see how normal people react to Wonderlandian fashion.

Poor Gowland :c It's probably his facial hair that makes him unattractive to these fangirls. I've actually been pondering over this, some day i will draw some HNKNA characters with facial hair. It's something I've always wanted to do. Make anime bishies more rugged. But especially Heart no Kuni characters, those I want to draw the most are Elliot, Julius, Ace, Nightmare, Blood and Peter. And probably Grey too, since he's awesome. (And one of the older role holders. ) The problem is that Nightmare and Peter would most probably end up looking like old men with their white/gray hair.
LOL MAGICAL GIRL NIGHTMARE. BWAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA
He does really look like a Vocaloid, probably because his clothes have a similar "layout" to the "basic Miku clothes". (Which many Utau's are based on.) With the gloves, and the shirt that splits on the bottom. And his belt thingies. I've also always been wondering why he has an eyepatch, I don't remember if that's ever covered in the games. I've never heard anything about it anyways. Maybe he just wants to look cooler or something. But he mostly looks like a Pirate- vocaloid to me. (But he will always be a pirate magical girl from now on thanks to you LOL)
His workers do look a bit ridiculous, scratch that. They DO look ridiculous. I mean, what's the use for those swirly things that protrudes from their shoulders. And the male workes have the ugliest hair of all faceless.
Imagine how people would react if you went down the streets dressed like Gowland? Or one of his workers.

I feel that if you were to give Blood some huge mustache he'd look like he came out of the 19th century or something. Someone should have mutton chops! Or one of those 1970s style staches. (Okay, now I'm just thinking of time travel or something. Like Elliot in the 70s)
Actually, I think the eyepatch has something to do with his role, since the only two times he has it off his eye is still closed or is covered by his hair. Joker seems to have a similar situation, and is likely why his is on the opposite side with sort. But just imagine him all "mahou shoujo clover sparkle att-*cough*"
I think the fact their uniforms are so ridiculous must be why they probably have the most say in anything compared to the other faceless in different territories. They have scared their boss on a few occasions.
Actually, I showed some of the character designs to a guy I know, and he totally loved Gowland's look. Like, I can imagine him one day, walking down the street, whistling, trying to be all "SWAG!"

Personally I think Blood already looks to be from the 19th century. But this is probably because this is Alice's time period. I've seen some fics when it's written like Alice is from a world with cars and computers. But she's obviously from a time between the 18th-19th century. This pisses me off a bit, who even wears big dresses like that in our time?
I never thought about the eyepatch like that O: *facepalm* It makes alot of sense though. Maybe the eyepatch is a symbol for their ability to reach through dimensions or something. And both the Jokers and Nightmare seems to be some of the "higher" role holders. They all seem to be involved with running the game itself.
I think their uniforms look like that because they were designed by Gowland and yeah.... He sure has a knack for fashion. *sarcasm*
Maybe your friend is secretly Gowland? I sure imagine so anyway hehe.

True. I think that at least Wonderland is around 19th century or something, give or take a bit of anachronism stew, but there are petting zoo people running around, so that's the least of our worries. But still, I'm not too sure about Alice. I mean, I guess I could be overthinking, (It's not like they try to be super historical actuate) but in the 19th century someone of her age wouldn't have such a short skit, among other details. But if it is modern times, it could just be lolita fashion. She did mention how she didn't think she was suited for frilly things that her sister liked. Maybe Lorina was just into things like lolita or aristocrat clothing. (I tend to dress in vintage, military, mod, dolly-kei, or casual lolita inspired fashion myself, mixed and matched or toned down to suit my needs. That or I deck myself out in fandom merch.)
I can just imagine him as a younger Gowland. Except more of a gamer. And totally fine with haunted houses.

No, maybe her skirt would be a bit scandalous. But I still think she's supposed to be from the 19th century, by judging how she and her sister dresses.
But Alice has a shorter skirt to look more youthful and cute, this is common in manga. And by that I mean when Japanese artists draw people who are supposed to be from the 19th century, they usually make this "short skirt" mistake.
But who knows, you might be right. Lorina being into lolita fashion is a pretty funny idea.

SailorX2 In reply to jaoosa [2013-08-03 20:07:18 +0000 UTC]
Well, I suppose it's not too much of a deal. And yeah, they do have a tendency to throw short skirts and impractical armor for rule of cool, often in the flavors of illogical amour placement, or scary and impractical (a la Avatar: youtu.be/vcsoWKFolbw)
Alice did sound like Lorina had her wear the dress. Perhaps Lorina was into Lolita fashion but moved onto the Aristocrat style feeling she was too old for regular lolita, which she then made Alice wear, since she thought it looked good on her. Or something like that.

Oh Avatar, memories memories... There is so much wrong with how females are portrayed everywhere, especially games and comics. It's always curvy, skinny women showing off all their goods and huge muscle guys who can wear the same type of armor but yet it's fully covering their bodies. I've played alot of MMORPG's and I can't think of a single one without that kind of fanservice in it. Sure, there are so awesome female armors, but the majority of them are just .... Bleeurgh.
This drawing pretty much sums it up. 24.media.tumblr.com/0b346b02a7…
It's just strange if she didn't like the dress why would she wear dresses forever after that? Or well, idk. She probably has a dress to look like the iconic Alice in Wonderland.

What I find interesting is that the genre of sci-fi (who definitely doesn't shy away from zee fanservice), wouldn't exist in the way it is without Lucile Ball. Lucy. As in I Love Lucy. She single handedly fought NBC to make Star Trek an actual show. Star Trek! I think that says something. That makes it even worse when guys don't take me seriously as a gamer or nerd or what have you because I can wear a skirt. Granted, I don't mind seeing fanservice for either gender (*cough*Free!*cough*), but there is a limit, and that shouldn't be the only thing defining a character.
And then there's this lovely thing: harkavagrant.com/index.php?id=…

(God, I'm going to buy the poster for this if it's the last thing I do. I love Kate Beaton.)
Probably wore the dress for the Alice look, and maybe if it is something Lorina picked out then it wouldn't surprise me if she gave in to Lorina's insistence.

Well, I'm not that big of a fan of Star Trek. But that's some interesting fact. But really, Metropolis www.imdb.com/title/tt0017136/ was the movie that really kickstarted the sci-fi genre. It was this movie that started the stereotype "sci-fi-ness", so Star Trek wouldn't exist the same way either without this movie.
I don't know if I can really call myself a gamer, I play games, however I don't do it that much anymore because it takes too much time. (Yet I love drawing which is very time-consuming.) Some may refer to me as a gamer or a nerd, but I don't put emphasis on it that much. Except if i happen to be in conversations about it. And it's nice to have female friends who game but I seriously dislike girls who are like "HEY I PLAY GAMES, GUYS LOOK AT ME. I'M A GAMER CHICK."
I've only seen one episode of Free, and it felt a bit weird seeing fanservice for girls in an anime. It's rare in anime's that are "non yaoi". But some scenes almost felt a bit creepy, because of their over detailed backs and stuff. I know it's supposed to be sexy but some scenes just had plain wonky anatomy. >,<

Good point. I'm not as much into sci-fi as I am fantasy (Though I do have Doctor Who and Star Trek, as well as a decent amount of Star Wars and some other things, though they tend to have a different flavor like retro or dieselpunk), but yeah, that movie definitely helped bring alot of those elements.
The last two school years I was kinda drifting away from gaming. (Partially because I was catching up on a lot of shows like Supernatural) But when summer started, I got back into it. It's probably because I got whacked with giant bouts of nostalgia. They've remasted ICO and Shadow of the Colossus (freakin' minimalistic, interactive, ART), and now there's going to be one for Final Fantasy X/X-2 and Kingdom Hearts. Urgh, my memories! I basically went on a PS1 gaming spree for the first month of vacation, curtesy of my emulator, then got Bioshock Infinite... (I don't even play FPS games normally). I think girls that run around yelling that they're gamers aren't helping the fact that there are girls out there that actually care about games instead of getting attention, seeing as it's a pretty common misconception that it's all for attention, similar to the fake lesbian thing. It's like the quote, "Having power is like being a lady, if you need to keep saying it, you don't really have it."
Yea, Free does have some strange looking moments. And really, if I remember correctly you don't get that kinda of physique from JUST swimming. Oh well. Fanservice isn't inherently a bad thing.

I love sci-fi and fantasy equally. Actually most of my fandoms are usually one of these genres. It's hard to list the biggest, but the fantasy one is a bit easier. LOTR and The Hobbit, fantastic stuff. I haven't read the books but the movies were my childhood. I bought myself "The hobbit" a couple of months ago and my sister borrowed it and I haven't seen it since then. As for sci-fi it has to be... Hmm.. The Halo franchise and Marvel related stuff. If you can call Marvel sci-fi. It sure does have alot of sci fi elements anyway.
For me I actually played more games during school than during summer. Damn procrastination. I have actually never played any of those games, probably because they are console games and I bought my first one last year. An Xbox 360. I only played pc games when I was younger, which was mostly Halo, The Sims 2, Black and White and GTA San Andreas. The thing is that I love games which I can run around in freely, and my brother buys me so many cheap games for my xbox. I have like 30 games, and only 4 of them aren't FPS. And to be honest I'm a bit tired of FPS, It's always the same thing. The game I've played the most during this summer gotta be Prototype, I love running around wrecking shit and eating old ladies.
I think that female games are losing it's "cool points" since it's not really that rare anymore. But It's still equally annoying =,=
And yeah, the guys in Free are a bit ripped from just swimming. Swimmers tend to be lean, they often have abs but it's rare to have such prominent muscles everywhere like the guys do in some scenes of Free. Oh well, I probably won't stop watching it anyway. Even if I've only seen it once before. It just feels a bit too much yaoi to me, which I'm not a fan of. I'm not homophobic I just don't find it so... Attractive like other girls do. Which seems to be rare in internet standards.

I love Tolkien's works. Though sometimes it can get kinda difficult to read LotR because of how descriptive it gets (unless you really like that kind of stuff, I'm just used to it), though the Hobbit's much faster to digest. (My Modern British Literature class read this as our final book of the year. Oh I love English teachers with great taste in books!) Right now I'm trying to read the Silmarillion. I grew up with fantasy books (mainly Tamora Pierce and Harry Potter), video games (as I started off with RPGs back in their golden years of not speaking), and lots of fairy tales (à la Disney and my book collection). I didn't really get into sci-fi until I played a few games that kinda mixed it with fantasy. That and a few space operas. Also around the same time I got into anime, so I can credit Cowboy Bebop too. I tend to think of superhero stuff in it's own category, though it can count as sci-fi. But meh. As long as Stan Lee makes a cameo in everything it's all good. (Though more of my favorite villains tend to be DC...)
I started off with console games, and I remember playing Super Mario and holding the gun up the screen glass during Duck Hunt. I've been more of a Sony person after that though, because up until recently, I've mainly been an RPG gamer (I've even got a PS1 emulator, so I can relive the nostalgia). I guess the popcorn plots I saw in some FPS games steered me away. That and I rarely messed with them so I was just shit at playing (though I did play other genres, and really like it when genres mixed). Bioshock and Portal changed my mind about em though. (But I consider Portal a puzzle-type game). I also love games that feel expansive. Though I would also like to see a game that feels claustrophobic. Playing up an element like that could work very well in a horror game, especially with the right soundtrack (I know the Shining had a soundtrack that could really play up that claustrophobic feel when in a crowded movie theater). I just don't see many that really achieve that though. I mean, you've got tunnels and dungeons and such, but then again, those sewers are absurdly spacious more often than not and really the effect is more "linear progression" than anything. And I've really gotten into those more minimalistic and artsy games recently. Especially Journey. It's brilliant and takes away every single bad thing out of modern gaming. It's more of an experience than anything. Doesn't even have dialogue (written or spoken). Trailer: youtu.be/_mF8KkDiIdk
I do love the Sims though. Even if I do wind up showcasing the video game cruelty potential at times. (For the Sims 2, there's a mod for grilling babies, but hey, I let those fortune sims be millionaires!)
Same as you I'm not homophobic at all (or that would have made my visit to that drag restaurant more than a little awkward), but I'm simply not into yaoi. I don't like the whole "Bury your Gays" trope, but I'm pretty neutral. Utena is one of my favorite anime (It could be yuri, it could be culture, but I say everyone's just bi).
Gay couple? Okay! Straight couple? Sure! Captain Jack Harkness? Hell Yeah!!! Emperor Caligula and his horse? Err...
I fear the popularity of yaoi may be similar to the whole "pretending to be lesbian because it's hot" thing.

I've read a bit of them and the detail Tolkien uses in his writing is pretty impressing. But it's almost a bit too detailed and might disinterest me after a while. I also want to read them in English, but it's a bit hard to find here in Sweden for some reason. (Though, I haven't looked all that much. I mostly checked the english part in the library.) Also I've been a fan since it got released, I was four at that time. So I really haven't thought of reading the books. I will though, in the future. My dad is a real bookworm and he always borrowed alot of fantasy books for me at the library. I usually read them but when school got a bit tougher I stopped. ( I was usually reading during the nights) And since then it's pretty hard for me to get really into a book. Except fanfiction, for some reason. I love to hunt good fanfictions.. The last one I really enjoyed was the first book of Hunger Games, the 2nd book was decent too but not like the first. And the 3rd just sucked if you ask me.
I have no idea how old I was when I first got into anime, I think the first things I watched was some Naruto. No wait, it was films at first. (I had no idea it was anime.) I remember renting Metropolis (the anime version) and Spirited Away, and I saw Spirited Away with my parents and they just thought the film was odd. I remember that some parts frightened me. Hell, even the movie Chicken Little scared me with those creepy aliens before they went cute.
I remember playing PS1 with my brother alot. He's my half brother and he lived with his mother, but during visits here he often brought his consoles. I just can't remember what we played on the PS1, he can though, but he's a bit older than me. (He turned 20 a couple months ago, while I'm 16) I remember that we used to play Star Wars games and LOTR, but that might have been on the PS2.
Claustrophobic games you say? That might work, but personally I'm not really struck with fear when there's tight spaces in games.. It might work on the Oculus Rift though. I want to play Journey so bad, it might be on sale on xbox live but I can't install games like that because I have no hard drive. (I have one but the console won't let me install stuff or play old xbox games until I buy an extra....)
Oh, Utena. I've heard of it but I've never seen it. I've mostly seen MAD's of the opening.

The Hobbit and Silmarillion are much easier to read. The Hobbit was meant to be a children's tale (not to say the writing quality was sacrificed or anything), and the Silmarillion was in a more myth-like style. The beginning parts are creations myths. And they are written like them. I love reading, but it's hard for me to start sometimes. Once I get going I don't put the thing down (and I have a wide range of tastes, so I can at least get some value out of most books, even if it's really not my thing) but I guess I'm just lazy. I either read it all in one day or wait months before reading the next chapter. Last time I read a book almost non-stop without those school-designated reading times was The Fault in Our Stars. I started it thinking it was going to have a foregone conclusion... (man I was wrong)
I basically started with Pokemon. But I didn't really register the whole anime thing until I started Sailor Moon. Around the same time I also became a big RPG gamer, thanks to Threads of Fate (a little known but fun game). I now have an emulator on my computer, so I still play it. (Nostalgia attack! Because what's better than playing as a spoiled, selfish, princess afraid of pumpkins with goals of world domination?)
I'm not very scared of tight spaces in games either. But I would love to find something that could make it work. That could really give a new element to things. Oh and Journey's just gorgeous. I have a PS3 though.
Utena was something I started on because I really loved Rose of Versailles. The mother of shoujo genre! And a main character who was raised as a man (without the story trying to make her some sort of suddenly girly relationship sue as things go on), French Revolution, duels, stage versions, etc. Of course, I enjoy Utena in it's own way. But seriously, I'm pretty sure every character is bi.

I relate alot to your situation when it comes to reading, I think I'm the same. That's probably why I read fanfics much more like I said, they are shorter and if you don't like it you can find another one much quicker than a book. Hmm, the last book I completed was a book about a brother and sister that went.. Incest. I got it from a teacher, she told me to read and review it. I finished in about 3 days. With alot of breaks though, but I'm a very quick reader.
(When I learned to read I actually had to learn how to read slower because my teacher kept yelling at me for reading too fast.)
Now that I think about it.. Pokemon might have been the first for me too, I have some hazy memories about watching it. I asked my mother and apperantly there was a pokemon movie I saw nonstop when I was 3 years old.
I could have bought a PS3, but I choose an Xbox 360 instead for the Halo games. Not sure what I'll get of the new generation though, I'm pretty sure I'll get one. But I don't know what console, Xbox one will have Halo. But everything you hear about it on the net seems bad, and Playstation will probably have epic graphics.
Okay I'm going to watch Utena now. I love stories like that lol

I'm also a fast reader. But I would always pick the long or higher level books. So I wouldn't get up when the bell rings. Sometimes I wonder about the taste in books some teachers have though. I had two literature classes for my last high school semester. I started the day with a really boring world lit class. I probably could have at least appreciated the books more, if not flat out like them if it wasn't for the fact we had such a terrible teacher. She wasn't strict or anything over the top like that, but it felt as if she didn't want to interact with us. Plus the work was so easy I just didn't bother to care. Then, after chem class, I'd go off to brit lit. I wound up in that class by accident because I messed up really bad in math (repeats same reasoning to poor grade in world lit, but without any natural talent for numbers), which is strange because I can do science really well (taking college-level science classes). Either way, got kicked outta that, but best mistake ever. I totally got the awesome teacher I had freshman year. It even felt like a roundabout ending I was learning about in creative writing class. (same teacher, same room, even same desk!) His class was much harder, despite his really laid back attitude. But I still get all the points plus bonus on everything. Plus he's got good taste in books. Also, I got to paste a giant image of Gollum on his door. How is that not awesome? Even though those art teachers inspired me to be a teacher, comparing two classes that were supposed to be so similar and how shitty one became and how awesome the other was because of the teachers defiantly pushed me more in that direction.
I normally I just wait a while when getting a new console. I'm happy to wait with my retro titles by my side if it means lower prices.
Utena is much more surreal and fairy tale like than Rose of Versailles though. Rose of Versailles is the one in Revolutionary France, btw. But then again Utena starts off with a girl who decides to become a dashing prince...

It's just something with swedish books.. They are much less exciting to read translated than reading them in their original english for example.
I probably would appreciated our books more if it weren't for all the assignments that usually followed..
Oh, math. If it didn't bore me so much I would probably be much better at it. The worst thing is that if I want to get into a game-related university ( I wanna do game design or something like that) I need to go an extra math class, with much harder math. Just for the merit points, I certainly don't look forward to that. I also have noticed that my airheaded-ness makes my math skills suffer, I can't discuss a math problem and solve it in my head on the same time for example. And when I count in my head I usually start to think about other stuff.
Waiting for lower prices is much smarted, but many people just want the newer games as fast as possible. I hate it when people buy a game just because it's new but doesn't bother to play the prequel first. If it has one, of course. Those people are the douchebags of the gaming society.

Wow, my math class this time around is so... easy. Like, freshman in highschool easy. Or at least so far. It's just, I know it's for non-math people who just need a math credit, and yea, I did purposefully adjust my schedule to get the easiest professor ever, but now I can't stay awake in this 9:30am class. And I naturally wake up at 7 on a bad day. (never used an alarm clock)
I can understand being excited for a game or preordering it or something, but I do hate it when people only want it because it's the newest thing. That just irks me. I can be a big critic at times, for everything ranging from music to the stitching of a plush doll (I also love being critiqued though too. I just like to keep it constructive), so I really do want games for quality! Plus, I don't have money do to stuff like that. What's next, are they gonna wave a winning lottery ticket in front of my face?

I love Gowland so much! He just seems like a trustworthy guy to me.
(>u> By the way, I love Lindsey Stirling's cover of Thrift Shop)

Yeah, he's definitely pretty honest and gentle as long as you don't set off that temper.
I think it's helpful to listen to music that goes with whatever I'm drawing.
I was listening to those songs while drawing (like always), and I thought it was just perfect. Violins and ridiculous fashion? Definitely Gowland.
