Thank you! I haven't tried more than a few attempts of digipainting but I
- used the smudge tool for blending
- used soft brushes
- used a lot of custom brushes
- used dodge and burn trying to do highlights
This is a really helpful read and will def help me as I try to teach myself in my free time.

BlueSkies21 In reply to ??? [2011-11-10 03:02:51 +0000 UTC]

So there's one thing I don't understand, although I know its simple.. how do you apply the knowledge of gradients when you're coloring a picture? Is it simply that the gradient provides the right blending colors to use? Or should you color the whole thing with a base color, then add the darkest shadows and lightest highlights and use the opacity technique until you can't see the transition between the two colors?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SaisonRomantique In reply to BlueSkies21 [2011-11-15 12:56:34 +0000 UTC]

I think that will be better to put the basic colors on objects and after that adding shadows and highlights. The basic colors will help you to see the whole picture.

Good tutorial, I could learn something from this. Anyway, an improvement to the tutorial would be better use of English or more images to show the process.

Sorry I don't understand you. What do you mean about "be better use of English"
The process you can see in video. I posted link in comment

I've made a smudge brush that looks nothing like that effect at all and I don't personally agree with never using smudge tool but this is an excellent tutorial and one I'd love to share around with friends having trouble painting or any colouring for that matter in PS. Good job.

SaisonRomantique In reply to DraconianRain [2011-10-26 07:30:55 +0000 UTC]

The artist can use anything but he/she must to know how to use this or other tools. And there is why I wrote this:

"Remember, you can use the things you’d better not to use, but do it only when you know for sure how to use them, otherwise there will be no sense."

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DraconianRain In reply to SaisonRomantique [2011-10-26 08:00:12 +0000 UTC]

I'm aware of that. I'm sorry if I offended you. Just the wording, makes it a bit contradictory to say never then you can use it. Gives mixed messages is all, and a bit confusing. Beginners can be very literal with tutorial instructions and if you say never use something and they admire you they might never ever use that tool or experiment with it and potentially miss out with learning about it which is all I meant by what I said and again sorry if it offended you because I can see you took a lot of time to make this tutorial and it is a great tutorial. This is one of the best tutorials for painting on DA and actually explains unlike a lot of others skipping important things but mostly the explanation of how to blend and paint is done very well. Again sorry if I've offended you in anyway.

SaisonRomantique In reply to DraconianRain [2011-10-26 16:59:38 +0000 UTC]

Oh. Don't worry! You didn't offend me I think that maybe some problem is on translation from Russion to English. I want to say that beginners must to avoid such tools and "never" is a good word for this. In future they decide themself how and when use this or another tools.

really good basics, this will save many newbies out there.
A tip though, in order to make sure this info gets into the heads of the newbies: use more illustrations, you have a lot of text there. I'd recommend you to bold important words in the text in order to make the reader alert through the whole tutorial (since it's a pretty long tutorial, the mind will get tired after a while and start to skip the text parts and focus more on the pictures.)

And for the pictures, I'd suggest you do not only use color-bars as examples, it will sink down much faster if you actually show how it looks like in theory. Like with "light color moving away gets darker" could be illustrated with two or three trees with different distance from each other.

I don't know if you are asking for feedback or critique about this, but I feel this tutorial series are needed for this community. So I wanted to share my best tips for tutorials - they helped out a lot when I did my own tutorial series "manga to realistic" and "understanding anatomy".

More illustrations - this is a big problem for me. I like to talk a much I decided in this tutorial to say more that I can to say. But thank you anyway! I'll try to allow this in the future.

the illustrations doesn't need to be advanced, heck you can probably use stick-figures as examples haha I look forward to see more from you!
