Description
The Walter robots are out on a stroll (with human supervision of course) to show GG around in beautiful Balboa Park one sunny afternoon. The Spine is having a trip down memory lane by himself; talking about World's Fairs and such while the others are enjoying the local wildlife.---
My contribution to the third round of the "Let's draw SPG" project on Tumblr. This is just too much fun to pass up!
Photo reference provided by: Trekkiebeth | GeekShot Photography
I wanted to place the robots in a familiar and nostalgically important location - Balboa Park in San Diego, California. IRL, this place is where the band started busking as their robot characters and built the very foundation to the act we see today.
I have discovered that I don't like to rely too much on photo references when making backgrounds. It's much more rewarding to simply use my imagination, and that's why I like the previous group picture better. But I had fun nevertheless with this outdoor scene; figuring out daylight, textures, expressions... and generally messing up their daytrip.

This is amazing. The way you managed to managed to make them actually look like real life robots while still keeping the appearance of the actors is incredible. Not to mention all the little character quirks here and there.

Gimme a moment to scream in my head... there.
Hello, little birdie. I like your silly little hat. (See him folks?)
I'd suggest this be the whole poster if it weren't for all the other artists involved! The band needs a copy of this one by itself, please tell me that's gonna happen. They get some incredible stuff but this would blow them away.

How did you... what did you... WHAAAAA?
Okay, the composition and detail of this piece is flawless. Often times I'll find, in my own personal taste, a picture where the background is just as detailed as the focal point distracting and over-complicated. But in this, it's so much more immersive. Detail is gushing from every single square inch of this masterpiece, leaving so much to take in. This is not a piece that you can just look at once then go on from. It's such a feast for the eyes I am honestly dumb-founded, new surprises found everywhere. The chaotic flock of sparrows in the distance, the tiny hat on one o the birdies, the little "accident" on Rabbit's lapel, the hot-air balloon! UGH it's amazing.
The texturing is also perfect, and I love how you drew the bots. You used a seamless mixture of their cartoony, in-comic styles, and the likeness to the actors. Everything from Rabbit's distorted expression to Hatchworth's mischievous smile is dripping with personality. Plus, the robotic details give you that sense of reality, even while such facial elasticity as Rabbit's is not actually physically achievable with metal.
And oh those sandwiches look delicious.
Okay I have run out of things to say I am just going to sit here in awe for a while until I can find the strength to pick my jaw up from the floor.

This is absolutely stunning! I'm in love with the way you translate their make-up to realistic metal parts and underlying cables and wires! Just gorgeous!
