Description A revised version of Xiao Long Nv . Hopefully this one this better than the last..

Edit: Haha, whoops, forgot to edit the description after resubmitting the picture. xD Anyway, I fixed some of the things mentioned in the comments... I couldn't fix her "bendy straws" though, since I am not very good with hands. @_@ I put the outlines back, just changed the layer to "Overlay" so it wouldn't be solid black lines... I also decided that the last background was too bright, and made it all hyper, so I desaturated a bit... Same with her lips... Took away the "line" between her upper and lower lip too, but not sure if it's visible... Err....what else...? I think that's all, for now. O_o

Edit 2: Fixed her face a bit more... She should look prettier than before, although I am not too sure...

Edit 3: Changed her hair a bit, with the help of ~CinnamonSin . Probably overdid it a bit, but... heh...

Okay, you know what...? Enough of this... IT'S NOT A KIMONO! The belts for kimonos are higher up, closer to her chest and there is usually a big bow in the back. (Also, I've noticed that kimonos tend to make women have a flat chest, although I am not sure if this is true...)

wonderful color however you overly simplified the face and used black, black will always kill your realism...try a dark brown or something just not a black.

very soft pic you created here.. I like it very much.
the look on her face can calm a raging rhino (don't ask me where I came up with this analogy, I amazed myself too right now.. lol)
the hair is perfect, and so are the eyes and nose.
the right hand looks somewhat wierd, can't say why.
other than that.. amazing job

Oh gosh, how pretty T T I really love that youve decided not to keep with dark outlines - while still remaining outlines though, only colouring them as their contained colour. It really softens the picture, but maintains some crisp and contemporary definition

her expression is so sweet, and cute
really beautiful blend of realism and stylized character !

well.. I really like how the background is done- its quite fitting- nice and soft- the character is also kewl- for some reason the figure seems a bit flat though- but I'm not sure why, as the shading on the robes and stuff looks pretty nice- I guess thats just the style anyway... either way good stuff, and btw: I would relpy in the forum at the thread I posted too- but I'm trying to end it and start a new one thats a little more specific.. (so I would appreciate it if you also didn't post there thx).. thx for sharing though fo real!

It's her name. =3 If you translate it literally, it's "Little Dragon Girl". She is named that because her Chinese Zodiac is the Dragon.

Very nice. Your soft coloring style fits this picture perfectly - I'm particularly fond of the skin tones, but the folds on her clothing are great too. My only gripe would be the hands, they seem to simplistic compared to the rest of the piece, and a bit... spidery. Otherwise, beautiful work.

Nicely done. I especially like the way you render the hair. It's very define and show that you choose to render it properly despite the fact that you can go easy way with black hair. ^^

I personally would love to see more definition on the face but that is perhaps just the style of this type of painting. But have a look at work of ~iDNAR .. I'm sure you know of his works. There still a lot of definition on the way he CG the face but still maitain the smoothness of Chinesse painting.

Another thing is perhaps the clothing and the way you render the folds. I think you have really good sense of applying folds and shading for it. However it still feel not too natural. I also find it difficult to colour white clothing since it's easy to make it look very artificial but by applying different hue to the toning instead of using grayscale will make the clothing looks more natural.

Apart from that this is a very beautiful image. You capture the ambient really well with the simple background and colour scheme. Keep up the good work!

Hehe, thank you for the advice. However, I find that if I try to use colours besides grey on the shading, it will make the whole dress...another colour... O___O I was looking for a pure white colour, so any saturation kind of ruins that...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Juene In reply to sakura13 [2005-12-30 17:15:29 +0000 UTC]

Perhaps you're right. But have a look on this example by ~iDNAR here [link]

You'll notice that he uses blue and occasional yellow tone on the dress shading and he still manage to give this "pure white" feel to those material.

sakura13 In reply to Juene [2005-12-30 17:30:11 +0000 UTC]

I see what you mean... However, it will not work for me... That piece of clothing gives a pure white feeling because 1) the background is completely black, 2) the character looks like she is from royalty, and therefore has some sort of divine grace (did that make any sense? xD), and 3) I am not good enough to decide where to add those shades of yellow and blue to create the same pure... white. O_o

Juene In reply to sakura13 [2005-12-30 17:44:49 +0000 UTC]

Fair enough ^^
Don't get me wrong, it's just a suggestion. I myself always been told the same thing like putting hue variation instead of using natural colour for shading and personally I agree to those suggestion and I gradually see how this is applied to one's work but it's all come down to your personal preference and how do you like to approach your work.

Keep up the good work and Happy new year! Hope you have a great one!

She is very beautiful... Has a very becoming face, and also has an air of intelligence and nobility about her. Calm and serene, like those old time princesses. The soft colours are really pretty, her hair looks very silken (if a bit matted...) and her dress fabric flows very smoothly with that, I think... And I like the faint trace of an abstract background. It helps to set off her colours, and helps her to stand away a little from just a bare white background. But she really is lovely, that's the foremost thought (and the first) when I look at this.

Very pretty I love her face and the overall style. A suggestion for coloring though--the edges make it seem really blurry. I think defining it with lines or darker shading more would help make this look more refined. But it's still very nice!

very nice, though that right hand is weak, you could flesh it out and correct the fingers a little more, also keep in mind that there should be no lines in the lips, anly shadows and hues.

her neck seems tyo blend into her chin, try making her chin imperceptably shorter and using a stronger contrast there.

also her right eye, (on our left) doesn't have as much detail as her left eye(our right) if you make the lower lid of he rright eye more clear like the on on our right, then maybe her left eye won't look bigger then her right eye. ( i can see by the whites of her eyes that they are the right size but the detail on her left eye tricks the eye.)

the hair you caN see through the gap in her sleve shouldn't be so detailed, it should be hidden in shadow and therefore flat.
