Description I was taught right from wrong
By a murderer
I was taught truth from lies
By a magician
I was taught who my friends were
By my enemy
I was taught to be honest
By a professional liar


I was taught to always speak my mind
By being told to keep quiet
I was taught to be kind
By someone that beat me down
I was taught to smile
By someone who could never wipe a scowl of their face
I was taught to love
By being abused


I was taught to live
By someone who was already dead
I was taught to perform
By someone with stage fright
I was taught to be excellent
By someone that failed in everything
I was taught to rely on only my self
By being surrounded with people


I was taught to be perfect
By those that wanted to see me fail
I was taught to be loyal
By everyone that ever walked out of my life
I was taught to make people happy
By everyone who ever made me miserable
I was taught to control my temper
By those with explosive tempers


I was taught to take care of myself
By those who tried to kill me
I was taught what matters to me
By those that took it all away
I was taught how to be a girly girl
By a bunch of boys
I was taught how bad modern medicine can be
By a drug addict


I was taught who deserved my heart
By having my rib cage shattered
I was taught to stand center stage
By having my shoulders disjointed
I was taught not everyone is as nice as they seem
By having my wrist taken out
I was taught how far people are willing to go
By seeing him dying  


This may not makes sense to everyone
But to those it does
They know, just like me
Betrayal is the best teacher

I know this quite well (my ID-name says that pretty much too ).. and it is so true. But what's most important is that you learn from it and accept it. Not because you have to, but because you're strong enough to do so. Like this poem you wrote

Great poem!! And quite true- it is adversity that teaches us the most, not being coddled, but this is often a painful experience. Seeing someone behave in an ugly way, either towards you or towards someone else, makes you think "I don't want to behave like that." Being mistreated will make you realize the importance of being kind, more so perhaps than having people behave kindly towards you will.

mostly...its about a guy I dated when i was 13 he was abusive...along with other life choices...but his friends became mine...and ive always said i was raised by my friends not family

I cried when I read this just now.

I have lived so much of it. I cannot truly appreciate the beauty in such truth. And though it hurts, it is what makes us who we are, and we are not alone.

I have always been a pessimist. Things always managed to get worse and worse, especially lately. No matter how things always were, were I felt like I was powerless, and that nobody could help me, not even myself. But this poem opened my eyes a little bit. I had been in denial, out of pain and lack-of-hope. Part of me knew it, but I wouldn't admit it. I barely do even now.

I needed to see this. I needed this impact. Thank you, you I am going to save this, so I may not feel so alone again.
Power to you, and may we all heal from what binds us.

if you ever need to talk you could always message me...there has been alot i have gone through but anymore i am willing to talk about it...I am sorry for making you cry but gald to hear this came around at the right time...remember to just be strong and take things in strides...and don't let the bad beat you down but don't underestimate the seriousness of it

No, they were tears of gratitude. Of understanding. Of realization.

I would love to talk, and will keep you in mind; thank you. I just feel bad if I dump my hardships and problems on others. I don't want to scare anyone, or hurt them.

I'm just so lost right now, but this piece lead me on the right path. Thank you for that.

I have been trying to fav this for a while now, but it isn't working on my kindle. Apparently, it has downloaded it twice or something. I don't know. know But I will be keeping it, to cherish it's meaning.

And you rightfully deserve the attention! This is a wonder, humbling and painfully realistic poem. I (like many others, I am sure) can relate with nearly every word... we look to love to teach us love, but it takes heartbreak for us to truly understand it.
