Zep Hindle was an orderly at the hospital where John Kramer, now better known as the Jigsaw killer, was informed he had cancer. He was at the bottom of the food chain, ignored or subjected to ridicule every chance his superiors got, charged with all the dirty work and choking back all replies. No girlfriend, no boyfriend, no ambitions he would ever pursue. He only tasted power once, for the first time, when John granted him the chance with the aid of slow-acting poison and the mantra of "don't forget the rules". His task being playing the role of the mastermind behind a game, Zep would have probably become Jigsaw's right hand if he hand's screwed up immensely and ended up with his head being smashed in with a toilet lid.

Art Blanc was John Kramer's ex-wife's lawyer, and he was the best lawyer in the whole wide world. He managed to defend pimps, rapists, abusers, who all got away with their crimes unharmed. Putting it short, his story of judicial success was a goldmine for John to find his victims in. He may have been eloquent, smart and quick-witted outside of Jigsaw's surrealist traps, but at the end of the day, he was as much of a desperate lab rat as the rest. At least he stopped talking shit with his lips stitched shut.

Amanda Young had been unfairly framed for possession of drugs by Detective Mathews, possibly the one of Jigsaw's victims who subsequently suffered the most. She started consuming inside jail, which just added to her immense problems, tearing her life apart, turning her into the scum which Jigsaw despised so much. This girl was recovering from an OD in the same hospital where everything had started, and John found fascination in her. From the first moment, he knew she would be the only of his victims who would be able to find not death, but a fresh start, in his games: and she was the only survivor, the only worthy of carrying on after he was gone. Unfortunately, she eventually let the "killer" in "Jigsaw killer" have the best of her, but that's a story for another day.
