Summer, Year 761 of the New Age
The Oldegrove Gardens, Glenmore

Sorina brought Salem to the edge of the gardens where it was quiet and out of the way of the work of the other gardeners. Here, Salem could learn about her newfound magic and try to train herself to use it properly.

"Watch me," Sorina instructed, turning to a bare patch of grass and beginning to grow little sprouts from the soil. "A good flower needs a good stem. Don't focus so much on the bud; that will come along with a proper base. Give the roots life so they can in turn give it to the rest of the flower." Before Salem's eyes, the sprouts grew larger and reached higher, and small colorful buds began to develop at their ends. She was fascinated.

"You try. Make the buds brighter and the leaves greener," Sorina stepped back so Salem could have access to her newly grown flowers. The filly closed her eyes and focused hard. Her bottom lip pouted and her nose wrinkled. She dug deep just as her sister had told her to, willing the magic from down inside of her and into the plants at her hooves. She felt the energy flow forward, weak at first and then slowly stronger.

"That's it, good," She purred encouragingly, and Salem wagged her tail in excitement.

"Now try to open up the petals," Sorina said.

When the filly made no more progress, Sorina turned to look back at her, "Salem, are you-?" and saw that her little sister was suddenly very preoccupied with a purple butterfly.

Sorina smiled and laughed despite herself when Salem flicked her tongue out for a taste test on her new friend and wasn't so pleased with the outcome.

"That's called a butterfly."

Salem beamed when it fluttered its wings and tickled her nose with its legs.

"Flutterby!"
