yep. I always thought of Storm as an elemental (like Swamp Thing, or Ostrander and Mandrake's Firestorm), so I try to draw her that way. In her first appearance, she was barefoot and topless...

Very awesome version of the windrider! I love her design here, given her character I always figured she'd either rock the super-high heels or go bare foot and you really captured the latter.

thanks. I always saw Ororo as an elemental (like swamp thing), and I think those characters should be mostly naked, or at least barefoot (connected with the elements, not the artificial world).
people always laugh when i say that, until i point out that Storm was topless when Xavier found her in Giant Size X-men #1. Also when Kirby's human torch is in 'flame on' mode, he appears to be just a human-shaped ball of fire. Of course, the Thing (a rock elemental) is damn near naked as well.
anyways, Living in human society as a human (not to mention a role model and now a head of state), Storm has to wear clothes. Shoes, however, are still optional.

i was really disappointed when ultimate X-men came out that with an opportunity to reimagine the team, they did nothing to address all the complaints about Storm.
I love Storm. when i read X-men or other books with Storm in them, this is what i see... to me, this is the "real" Storm.

yeah, i like the idea of making her more accessible, but i think it really just means better dialogue ('by the goddess' lol). I didn't really find Millar's Storm any easier to relate to. like most storm interpretations, she seemed like a white girl painted brown.
other than watching her use her powers in cool ways and kick ass, i wouldn't say anyone has really gotten a definitive Storm that feels totally right to me. there are so many women who have the balance of regal (which i think is important to what makes her cool) and accessibility that has led to her longevity (Lauryn Hill, Jill Scott, etc)...
a woman who could take over a street gang like the morlocks, bring that vigilane style to running the X-men, or have rich and powerful dudes proposing.
but she's usually a glorified supporting character, so oh well...

i never read the Millar Ultimate stuff beyond the first couple issues, i didn't like it, but Storm gets better attention once Bendis and Vaughan came along. not saying she still didn't have problems, it still wasn't GOOD, haha. and you're right that she's written (and also drawn) basically as a white girl painted brown, but i still felt it was an improvement on regular Storm, i'm just saying i felt it was a small step in the right direction. but yeah i'm not gonna say it didn't suck.
i sort of feel like Storm is a lost cause, particularly in "main" continuity, i can't think of anything that would make her awesome that they could do, there's nothing that could erase all the dumb stuff they've put her through. gotta start over and start from scratch.

you're probably right. i can't remember the last time i cared about an X-men story, after being an addict as a kid. maybe i just outgrew it (GASP!), but I still hold onto the character in my heart.
now that i do fan art at cons and for fun (never did until the last few years), she is a character i like to draw, especially to reinterpret MY WAY!
